All the changes Apple has made to the Photos app since iOS 18

As part of iOS 18, Apple unveiled the biggest-ever redesign to the Photos app. With a single-pane interface, the new Photos app highlights collections and curation while being fully customizable to your liking.

The rollout of the Photos app, however, proved to be polarizing. While I’ve been a fan of it since it first debuted, Apple has made several tweaks in subsequent iOS 18 updates to address some of the most common complaints. It has also added several notable new features.

Apple starts winding down iPhone 14 and iPhone SE sales in the EU

As expected, Apple is starting to wind down sales of the Lightning-equipped iPhone SE and iPhone 14 lineups from the European Union. This comes as the EU’s common charger mandate is set to go into effect on December 28, requiring smartphones to feature USB-C for charging.

Apple collaborates with NVIDIA to research faster LLM performance

In a blog post today, Apple engineers have shared new details on a collaboration with NVIDIA to implement faster text generation performance with large language models.

Apple published and open sourced its Recurrent Drafter (ReDrafter) technique earlier this year. It represents a new method for generating text with LLMs that is significantly faster and “achieves state of the art performance.” It combines two techniques: beam search (to explore multiple possibilities) and dynamic tree attention (to efficiently handle choices).

Bloomberg: Apple scraps plans to offer iPhone hardware subscription service

Apple is no longer planning to create a “hardware subscription service” to make it as easy as possible to get a new iPhone every year. Bloomberg reports that the goal was “to make owning an iPhone like subscribing to an app,” but the project was “recently wound down.”

Tim Cook visiting Mar-a-Lago for Friday night dinner with Trump

Apple CEO Tim Cook is set to visit Mar-a-Lago on Friday night to dine with President-elect Donald Trump, according to a report from The New York Times. Cook joins a string of other tech leaders who have visited Trump’s Florida club over the last several weeks.

Apple Intelligence botched a notification summary about Luigi Mangione, and the BBC isn’t happy

The BBC isn’t pleased with Apple Intelligence’s notification summary feature. The corporation says that the notification summary feature “generated a false headline” about Lugi Mangione, who was arrested this week as the suspected killer of the United HealthGroup CEO.

The notification summary in question suggested that Mangione had shot himself: “Luigi Mangione shoots himself; Syrian mother hopes Assad pays the price; South Korea police raid Yoon Suk Yeol’s office.”
