A golf apparel brand loved by Chris Paul and Stephen Curry is breaking barriers in the sport. Here's how.

Eastside Golf

  • 2024 has been a landmark year for Eastside Golf.
  • The golf apparel brand was founded in 2019 by Olajuwon Ajanaku and Earl Cooper.
  • Together, they're helping break barriers to access, diversity, and inclusion in the sport.

Ten years ago, it would've been difficult to imagine the words golf and fashion in the same sentence.

Barring Tiger Woods' signature red polos and John Daly's eccentric pant choices, the sport has more often evoked memories of long-winded dress codes critiquing everything from shirt colors and buttons to the presence of belt loops.

But the golf landscape is beginning to change.

The National Golf Foundation (NGF) reported that in 2023, the sport had an estimated reach of 123 million in the US β€” more than one-third of the population β€” with "reach" defined by those over age 5 who'd played on or off-course, followed the sport on TV or online, read about it, or listened to a podcast.

In February, the NGF also reported the sport has seen increases in on-course participation from players from marginalized groups. The number of women and girls playing on-course has risen 23% since 2018, and the number of Asian, Black, and Hispanic golfers has increased 43%.

And while these advancements haven't quite reached the pros (Tiger Woods was the only Black golfer to compete at the 2024 Masters), the trend toward younger, more diverse players has brought new ideas of how today's golfers see, and want to represent, themselves.

Enter: Eastside Golf.

Founded by former Morehouse golf teammates Olajuwon Ajanaku and Earl Cooper in 2019, the brand has become a beacon for the growth of inclusion and access to the historically exclusive sport thanks to the work of its founders, community events, and collaborations with companies like Jordan Brand, Mercedes-Benz, Nike, Rolling Loud, and more.

Oh, and their pieces have been worn by everyone from NBA stars Chris Paul and Stephen Curry to former President Barack Obama.

This year has been particularly impactful for Eastside, as it collaborated with Shopify for a pop-up store in New York City, hosted its second annual namesake invitational, released the "Everyone's Game" collection with Nike, continued to give back to HBCUs, and presented the Rolling Loud Invitational on December 12.

As Ajanaku and Cooper look ahead to 2025, here's everything you need to know about the brand that's changing the game.

Eastside was founded after Olajuwon Ajanaku struggled to fund his professional golf career.

After graduating from Morehouse College in 2011 and 2012, respectively, Cooper and Ajanaku went their separate ways, with Cooper becoming a PGA professional and Ajanaku pursuing a professional career.

He did so for two years, and even won some mini tour events, "but it got to a point I just couldn't afford it anymore," Ajanaku told BI.

"I was taking up jobs and literally working at a golf course," he said, adding that he was "literally making pitch decks" to brands about potential sponsorship packages.

In an October interview with Barrons, he estimated that he only raised about $10,000 in those two years.

So, he went corporate, pivoting to a career in commercial vehicle finance, but never losing interest in golf.

When Ajanaku decided he wanted to turn pro again, he knew it would be hard to find sponsors and decided to make his own logo to represent himself: a Black man wearing jeans, a sweatshirt, and a hat, head down as he's swinging the club back while a Cuban link chain flies in the opposite direction. He called it The Swingman.

The Swingman logo became the foundation for Eastside Golf's brand.

Ajanaku said the Swingman logo is a representation of the way he feels when he's out on the golf course.

Ajanaku told BI he initially planned to put the logo on his bag and polo, and described the design as "the way that I feel when I'm out on the golf course."

Per Cooper's suggestion, Ajanaku printed the design on a T-shirt, too.

"I was in downtown Detroit. I maybe got stopped like 100 times in two hours, just like, 'Who are you, what is that logo, where can I get it, and do you play golf?' I was just like, 'Damn, I got something, but still don't know what it is,'" Ajanaku said.

Cooper's advice: Run with it.

Ajanaku made about nine SKUs to start, putting the Swingman on T-shirts, socks, lapel pins, sweatshirts, and even umbrellas.

He mailed the first 3,000 orders from his Detroit apartment.

"And from there, I knew that I had something," he said.

The costs to play golf don't just affect aspiring professionals; they're a barrier to access at all levels, so Eastside devised Community Days.

"I think growing up, there were certainly challenges as far as being able to afford golf," Cooper told BI. "Golf tournaments were very expensive, so I had to ask for money from family and all different types of things."

The NGF reported that in 2023, "the average playing fee for an 18-hole round of golf at a US public golf course was $43," an 18% increase from prices in 2019. And that's not including other necessities like attire, equipment, travel, and tournament fees.

In response to the issue, Eastside came up with Community Days. On these days, the brand buys out a golf course in the US and brings in food, music, products, instructional opportunities, and more for community members of all ages to enjoy.

"We knew we couldn't make golf cheap, but we wanted to eliminate the financial burden completely," Cooper said.

Community Days have become one of the company's premier events, and everyone in the organization is required to attend at least one or two annually.

"It just lifts everyone's spirits so much … it's like putting the battery in your back because you really get a chance to see the impact firsthand," Cooper added.

The brand also gives back to their community at Morehouse and other HBCUs.

Both Cooper and Ajanaku were awarded scholarships to play at Morehouse College, an HBCU. There, they won the national title in 2010 and have continued to give back to the college ever since, donating nearly $300,000.

Morehouse golf head coach Edgar Evans Jr. told BI that the collaboration between the program and Eastside "has been a blessing."

"The program has always had a ton of potential, but just like any other college program, if you don't have any support, including monetary support, it's not going to get where you need it to go," he said. "So their contributions have been so important to us growing."

In addition to monetary donations, Eastside has also donated equipment and worked with Mercedes-Benz, their namesake invitational's presenting sponsor, to gift the Morehouse golf team sprinter vans.

The brand also has a roster of professional and NIL athletes, including Michael Herrera, Wyatt Worthington II, Kihei Akina, Morgan Riley, Bailey Davis, Matthew Vitale, and Kota Kaneko, Eastside Golf Japan ambassador.

Eastside has collaborated with big brands like Nike.

Mykenna Maniece/Business Insider

One of Eastside Golf's most recent brand collaborations was announced in September: a collection with Nike called "Everyone's Game," which featured two shoes, each customizable with six first-of-their-kind removable Nike swooshes.

From maroon and white for Morehouse and blue and white for Spelman College, to gold for the Swingman's gold chain and a mirror to β€”Β according to the product description β€” "reflect how you see yourself in the game," each design had a specific callback to Eastside's roots.

Ajanaku said it was "super dope" to work with Nike and have the opportunity to use their technologies, ask questions, and go back in their vintage collections.

"I had a great time, all in all, from the Eastside Golf creative team to the Nike design team, I mean, I feel like we meshed well together," he said.

The brand has had to be protective of itself and its community, too, especially when it came to partnering with the PGA of America in January 2024.

Cooper said he was proud of Eastside's commitment to holding out until the partnership was right between the two brands, and that they wanted it to be about more than just checking a box, but getting real support.

"That hasn't been an easy road because I think we have a very strong point of view of golf, and I think when you talk about a conglomerate like that, that's been around forever, over 100 years, they have a point of view, too. And I think they don't always align," Cooper said, adding that he thinks the reason PGA of America invested was because "they recognized Eastside Golf as the future of the game."

He continued, "So, that's just a huge vote of confidence, and it's something that we don't take for granted. But it definitely took saying, 'No,' sticking to our guns, and making sure that it was done right and that we felt comfortable and we didn't feel like we were selling ourselves short or selling the community short."

Eastside also sells items including sweatshirts, hats, golf bags, and club covers.

The brand has grown significantly since Ajanaku's first nine SKUs to sell a wide range of men's and women's apparel and golf gear.

Eastside Golf merchandise is available on their website, in stores throughout the US and UK, and, starting in June 2025, the brand will open its flagship store at Detroit Metro Airport.

Looking forward, the brand hopes to see its "non-traditional view on golf" continue to become more popular.

"They mean everything for the sport, to the culture," Chris Paul told Boardroom. "All of us equate everything to Tiger Woods, but now you can show up and see the Eastside Golf logoman? It's iconic."

Ajanaku told BI he thinks golf is already becoming a sport for all kinds of athletes, albeit with Eastside Golf's help, and that as the brand continues to integrate with purist golfers at PGA events and tournaments, the brand's "non-traditional view on golf" will become more popular, "and more companies will try to start doing that if they haven't already."

"And then lastly, I just feel like this logo at the end of the day will be, I'd say the next big logo," he said, adding that Eastside is trying to be just as big as a Ralph Lauren.

"If you truly look at the logo, [it's about] truly standing in what you feel your purpose is and just looking how you want to look and playing the sports that you want to play," Ajanaku said.

And as for the future? Ajanaku is returning to his professional aspirations β€” "that's a full-circle moment for the brand, something that we're excited about," Cooper said β€” and Eastside is looking forward to positioning themselves as a leader in the industry.

"I think we'll just continue to show how to grow the game in a unique way," Cooper said, highlighting the brand's Community Days, women's line, and new products. "I think we're very excited about just the impact that we're making … so as we continue to double and triple and scale, but also maintain that ethos of what this brand is all about."

The Pope goes electric with a Mercedes-made popemobile EV

5 December 2024 at 11:31

  • Pope Francis received the first all-electric popemobile from Mercedes-Benz.
  • The G 580 model has a classic white exterior and a swiveling adjustable seat in the rear center.
  • The Vatican recently announced plans to transition to a fully-electric fleet by 2030.

Mercedes-Benz has supplied the Vatican with popemobiles for decades β€” and for the first time, the Pope will ride an all-electric version.

"The first all-electric G-Class combines sustainability, elegant design and maximum functionality," Mercedes-Benz Group AG's chief design officer, Gorden Wagener, said in a release. "It is a great honor for us to be able to present this special vehicle to Pope Francis today."

Mercedes-Benz said it has been working on the vehicle for about a year and it contains four electric motors for each wheel. The vehicle's electric drivetrain was made to accommodate slow rides at public appearances.

The vehicle has a classic white exterior, like former popemobiles. In place of the popemobile's bench seat, the rear now features a swiveling and height-adjustable single seat. Two seats are also on the right and left of the main seat for other passengers.

Mercedes-Benz

The company's popemobiles are specially crafted white vehicles used to carry the pope through large crowds in St. Peter's Square while behind bulletproof glass. The new vehicle comes just in time for the 2025 Jubilee, which occurs every 2025 years and is expected to attract millions in Rome.

Mercedes-Benz didn't respond to a request for comment about the vehicle costs, but some estimates have pegged it around $500,000.

While Mercedes-Benz has been the standard manufacturer for years, the Pope ditched his typical popemobile for a Hyundai in 2015. He also previously approved plans for a new electric popemobile made by Fisker, but it's not clear if that was ever delivered and the EV company filed for bankruptcy earlier this year.

The new EV popemobile arrives amid a larger push from the Vatican to go all-electric.

Pope Francis specifically has emphasized the need for sustainable development. In his 2015 encyclical letter Laudato si', he wrote about the dangers of the environmental crisis and cited the need for lifestyle changes. In November, the Vatican also announced plans with Volkswagon to transition to a fully electric fleet by 2030.

Ola KΓ€llenius, chairman of the board of management at Mercedes-Benz Group AG, said in a press release that it's sending out a "clear call for electromobility and decarbonization."

"Mercedes-Benz not only stands for the special and individual β€” but also for consistently creating the conditions for a net-carbon-neutral new car fleet in 2039," KΓ€lleniu said.

I drove a $78,000 Mercedes-Benz CLE450 Coupe. It's a high-tech, modern car with the heart of a classic GT.

  • Mercedes-Benz replaced its C-Class and E-Class Coupes witih the CLE Coupe.
  • I was impressed by the car's mild-hybrid engine, luxurious cabin, great tech, and stylish looks.
  • I was not a fan of the CLE's cumbersome capacitive touch controls.

The Grand Tourer is a nostalgic throwback to days gone by of sleek European coupes with powerful engines capable of covering large distances, in style, at high speeds.

With the world gravitating toward EVs and crossover SUVs, the number of coupes on sale these days has dwindled.

Mercedes-Benz has trimmed the number of two-door coupes in its lineup from four down to two: the CLE and the AMG-GT.

The CLE replaces both the C-Class and E-Class Coupes. It's also offered as a convertible, which we tested earlier in 2024.

I recently spent a week with a 2024 Mercedes-Benz CLE450 4Matic Coupe around Atlanta.
The left rear corner of a red 2024 Mercedes-Benz CLE450 4Matic Coupe parked next to a field.

Benjamin Zhang/Business Insider

I was impressed by the CLE450's powerful turbocharged, mild-hybrid inline six-cylinder engine, luxurious cabin, excellent tech content, and attractive styling.

There wasn't a lot wrong with the CLE, but my biggest gripe with it, and most current-generation Mercedes-Benz products, is their cumbersome capacitive touch controls. More on that later.

My test car came to $78,360.
The left front corner of a red 2024 Mercedes-Benz CLE450 4Matic Coupe parked in front of a building.
The 2024 Mercedes-Benz CLE450 4Matic Coupe.

Benjamin Zhang/Business Insider

My CLE450 4Matic Coupe test car started at $65,650. Freight fees and a long list of tech, luxury, and styling options added nearly $13,000 to the price tag.

The CLE cuts an attractive figure on the streets of suburban Atlanta.
Two photos show the front and rear of a red 2024 Mercedes-Benz CLE450 4Matic Coupe parked on the street.

The CLE's front end features a large three-dimensional effect chrome grille that creates the impression of a galaxy of small stars surrounding a large central Mercedes-Benz three-pointed star logo.

The rear end of the CLE is dominated by its steeply raked roofline, prominent LED taillights, and large chrome faux exhaust tips.

Size-wise, the CLE is positioned in between the compact C-Class and midsize E-Class coupes.

Benjamin Zhang/Business Insider

At 191 inches, the midsize CLE is an inch shorter than the E-Class and six inches shorter than the C-Class Coupe.

Under the hood is a mild hybrid, 3.0-liter, turbocharged inline six-cylinder engine.

Benjamin Zhang/Business Insider

The CLE450 is powered by a 3.0-liter turbocharged inline-six-cylinder engine that produces 375 horsepower and 369 lb-ft of torque.

Its helped by Mercedes' 48-volt mild-hybrid system, which uses an integrated starter generator to contribute an additional 23 horsepower and 151 lb-ft of torque. It's designed to mitigate the effects of turbo lag and quicken the response of its auto start/stop system.

My test car boasted EPA fuel economy figures of 23 mpg city, 33 mpg highway, and 26 mpg combined.

The CLE450 drives beautifully, dispatching velvety smooth acceleration on demand.
The front cabin in a 2024 Mercedes-Benz CLE450 4Matic Coupe.
The CLE Coupe's front cabin.

Benjamin Zhang/Business Insider

The CLE450 delivers on its promise as a world-class grand tourer. The car is well-balanced with responsive steering. The suspension is set up more for comfort than outright cornering ability. But it remains a calm and collected customer in the twisty bits.

The turbocharged straight-six is smooth, dialing up near-instantaneous acceleration through its slick-shifting 9-speed automatic transmission and all-wheel-drive system.

The mild hybrid system performed as expected, effectively filling in any holes in the engine's torque and smoothing the traditional harshness of an auto start/stop system.

According to Mercedes, the 375 horsepower CLE450 can run from 0 to 60 mph in an impressive 4.2 seconds.

The coupe's interior is elegantly styled with a beautifully integrated suite of cabin tech.
Four photos show the front dash, center console, center stack, and panorama roof in the 2024 Mercedes-Benz CLE450 4Matic Coupe.

Benjamin Zhang/Business Insider

The CLE's cabin borrows heavily from the current C-Class. Its interior is an elegant blend of modern design and callbacks to classic Mercedes-Benz of days gone by, like the giant 11.9-inch touchscreen sitting below the trio of vintage turbine-design air vents.

Material and build quality are excellent. However, I was not a fan of the shiny piano black lacquer Mercedes chose for the center console, which is highly susceptible to unsightly smudges and scratches.

My biggest complaint with the CLE's interior is the lack of physical controls. While the touchscreen and capacitive touch-sensitive buttons are modern and sleek, they feel imprecise and are clumsy to use, especially while driving.

The focal point of the front dash is an 11.9-inch infotainment screen.

Benjamin Zhang/Business Insider

The CLE has the third-generation Mercedes-Benz User Experience (MBUX) infotainment system. The system is pretty well sorted at this point. It's responsive and easy to navigate, and the graphics look terrific. The system's overeager voice assistance is also far less intrusive than in past iterations.

The screen is also home to the surround-view camera system along with a host of additional capabilities like YouTube video streaming and games.

The car comes standard with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.

In front of the driver is a stylish three-spoke steering wheel.

Instead of a traditional gauge cluster, the CLE has a 12.3-inch digital display. The display is highly configurable, with layouts ranging from a traditional dual analog gauge look to a full-page navigation map.

My test car was also equipped with a handy color head-up display.

The black leather seats were comfortable and supportive.

Standard features on the CLE include adaptive high beam assist, active brake assist, Parktronic with active parking assist, blind spot assist, and Presafe.

You'll need to pay extra to get goodies like adaptive cruise control, automatic lane change assist, and active lane-keeping assist.

My Verdict: The Mercedes-Benz CLE450 4Matic Coupe is a modern luxury grand tourer with old-school charm.

My time with the CLE450 has been a blast. The miles simply breeze on by. It dispenses a sense of joy and contentment that only happens when you are at the command of a high-performance machine while swaddled in modern, high-tech luxury.

And that's the definition of a truly excellent GT car.

The pope gets his first electric popemobile from Mercedes-Benz

4 December 2024 at 11:44

Mercedes-Benz has delivered the first all-electric popemobile to the Vatican: a modified version of the German automaker’s G-Class SUV. Some of the biggest changes from the standard G-Class involve using the four electric motors at each wheel to carefully control the vehicle at low speeds as it travels around the Vatican grounds. • President-elect Trump plans to levy 25% tariffs on goods from Canada and Mexico, he said Monday.
  • These tariffs could include vehicles imported into the US.
  • There are dozens of Mexican and Canadian-made models sold in the US.

President-elect Donald Trump on Monday announced plans to enact 25% tariffs on goods made in Canada and Mexico when he takes office in January.

Mexico is the largest trade partner for the US, accounting for nearly 16% of total trade over the first three quarters of this year. Canada isn't far behind as the country's second-largest trading pattern, accounting for about 14.5% of trade.

Tariffs on goods from Mexico and Canada are especially problematic for the US automotive industry.

Mexico alone exports more than 2.3 million cars a year to the US, according to Commerce Department data.

Foreign and domestic carmakers like Ford, GM, and Nissan have invested decades of time and billions of dollars to establish a well-oiled, cross-border manufacturing and supply chain operation to make vehicles destined for US dealerships.

A 25% tariff would not automatically mean a matching price increase, though it would leave automakers β€” already struggling with shrinking profit margins β€” with little room to eat the cost without increasing the sticker price of their vehicles.

Large retailers like Walmart and Best Buy have already said consumer prices are likely to rise if businesses pass on cost increases to consumers.

Parts for cars, trucks, and SUVs sold in the US can cross the border several times during their production process, thanks to friendly conditions fueled by various regional trade agreements over the years.

Representatives from Ford, Honda, and the American Automakers Policy Council, a lobbying group representing Detroit's Big 3, did not immediately respond to requests for comment.

Nissan, Stellantis, General Motors, and Toyota declined to comment.

This comes at a bad time for US consumers who have seen the average cost of a new car skyrocket more than $10,000 since 2019 to more than $48,000. Many automakers, meanwhile, are planning layoffs and plant closures amid a slowdown in EV demand.

Information from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration shows that several dozen vehicles made in Canada and Mexico are currently sold in the US.
