Myles Garrett issues ultimatum as future with Browns hangs in the balance: 'I'm not trying to rebuild'

22 December 2024 at 06:18

The Cleveland Browns have three games remaining before they officially bring another disappointing season to a close.

Star pass rusher Myles Garrett appears open to continuing his career in Cleveland, albeit his time with the franchise could come to an abrupt end if the front office decides that taking a rebuilding approach is what's best for the team.

The Browns enter Week 16 with just three wins and are in last place in the AFC North division. Cleveland had to deal with uneven play from quarterback Deshaun Watson before he sustained a season-ending injury in October. The lack of production from the quarterback position appeared to directly impact the Browns' hopes of having a winning season.

The ruptured right Achilles marked the second consecutive year that Watson's season was cut short due to injury. The three-time Pro Bowler injured his shoulder last season in a Week 10 win over the Baltimore Ravens.

RAVENS TAKE DOWN STEELERS TO KEEP AFC NORTH RACE OPEN

The Browns enter Sunday's game against the Cincinnati Bengals knowing they will not make it to the playoffs. Being out of contention for the postseason is not something Garrett is particularly thrilled about. The defensive lineman also made it clear that he was not interested in being part of a rebuild at this point in his career.

"Well, for me, I mean first of all I want to win. I want the Browns to be able to put me and us in position to win," Garrett told reporters. "I'm not trying to rebuild. I'm trying to win right now. I want that to be apparent, when the season's over and we have those discussions, I want them to be able to illuminate that for me, illustrate that for me, so that can be something that I can see in the near future. Because that's all we want to do."

Garrett was also asked if he would consider playing for another NFL franchise if the Browns' approach in the near future does not align with his.

"I mean, it's a possibility, but I want to be a Cleveland Brown," he said. "I want to play here, play my career here. But if we choose to do a rebuild and it's two, three, four years out, I want to be able to compete and play at a high level, play meaningful games and be playing past January."

Garrett does have two more seasons remaining on his contract with the Browns, but he could decide to seek a trade at some point during or before the 2026 season. Garrett was the top pick of the 2017 NFL Draft and has gone up to rack up an impressive 99.5 sacks so far during his standout career.

If the Browns want to improve their odds of winning in 2025 and beyond, the team's decision makers will have to find a solution at the quarterback position.

After Sunday's matchup with the Bengals, the Browns close out the regular season with games against the Miami Dolphins and Baltimore Ravens.

Wife of Browns lineman rips Steelers fans for being 'blatantly disrespectful'

9 December 2024 at 06:02

The wife of Cleveland Browns offensive lineman Wyatt Teller took issue with Pittsburgh Steelers fans on Sunday afternoon as she watched her husband play at Acrisure Stadium.

Carly Teller wrote on X that Steelers fans were behaving poorly.

"The fans in Pittsburgh today were so blatantly disrespectful to me and the Browns girls," she wrote on X. "I’ve never felt so attacked by people who I literally did nothing to. Very sad/embarrassing behavior."

Teller added a selfie and another explanation on her Instagram Stories.

"When you’re just trying to have a drink and watch your husbands at work but surrounded by Steelers fans who are screaming at the and you the entire team," she wrote.

CHIEFS WIN AFC WEST FOR 9TH STRAIGHT SEASON AFTER GAME-WINNING FIELD GOAL GOES THEIR WAY

Unfortunately for Browns fans who made the trip to western Pennsylvania, the AFC North-leading Steelers won the game 27-14.

Browns quarterback Jameis Winston had 212 passing yards, two touchdown passes and threw two interceptions. He was sacked three times. Cleveland fell to 3-10 on the season.

Wyatt Teller is a three-time Pro Bowler with the Browns. He joined Cleveland in 2019 following a year with the Buffalo Bills. He has played in nine games for the Browns this season.

Wyatt and Carly Teller met in 2018, when the two were at Virginia Tech. They tied the knot in 2021.

NFL closes probe of latest Deshaun Watson sexual assault allegations without discipline

7 December 2024 at 13:17

The NFL's investigation into sexual assault allegations against Deshaun Watson has concluded.

After spending the past several months reviewing the case, the league has ended the probe.

An NFL spokesperson cited a lack of sufficient evidence while explaining the decision to shut down the investigation.

"The matter is closed," league spokesman Brian McCarthy said in an email to The Associated Press. "There was insufficient evidence to support a finding of a violation of the personal conduct policy."

Watson will not face punishment from the league. Since his arrival in Cleveland, the three-time Pro Bowl quarterback has mostly struggled when he has been healthy enough to take the field.

He has played in only 19 games over three seasons due to suspension and injuries.

ESPN STAR CALLS BROWNS' DESHAUN WATSON 'ALBATROSS,' WONDERS HOW TEAM WOULD'VE FARED WITHOUT HIM

He is ending the season on injured reserve for the second year in a row after he sustained an Achilles tendon tear in October. The 29-year-old quarterback continues to rehab the injury in hopes of returning next season.

Watson served an 11-game suspension in 2022. In September, a woman accused him of a sexual assault in Texas. She was seeking more than $1 million in damages before the sides reached a confidential settlement.

Watson denied the allegations through his attorney, Rusty Hardin.

The Browns still owe Watson $46 million in each of the next two seasons after they traded three first-round picks to Houston and signed him to a five-year, fully guaranteed $230 million contract that has backfired.

Watson was acquired by the Browns, who were comfortable with his character despite Watson being accused of sexual assault and inappropriate conduct during massage therapy sessions while he played for the Houston Texans.

Watson's future with the Browns remains uncertain.

His massive contract — and its salary cap ramifications — has put the Browns in a bind in terms of improving their roster. Cleveland has had a disappointing season after making the playoffs a year ago and could move on from Watson, but the cost would be exorbitant if the team releases him.

The Browns signed Jameis Winston for one season to be Watson’s backup. Winston has gone 2-3 as a starter since taking over. The Steelers host the Browns Sunday. Cleveland upset Pittsburgh in Week 12 in a snowy AFC North tilt.

ESPN star calls Browns' Deshaun Watson 'albatross,' wonders how team would've fared without him

3 December 2024 at 14:40

The Cleveland Browns dropped to 3-9 after falling to the Denver Broncos on "Monday Night Football," but fans have to admit Jameis Winston has kept the team in games as the team’s starting quarterback.

He's won games against two divisional opponents, the Baltimore Ravens and Pittsburgh Steelers.

With the first half clock winding down Monday, ESPN color commentator and Pro Football Hall of Famer Troy Aikman discussed the Browns’ quarterback situation.

During his synopsis, he called Deshaun Watson, the embattled quarterback out for the remainder of the season, an "albatross."

CLICK HERE FOR MORE SPORTS COVERAGE ON FOXNEWS.COM

"You know, this is a tough league," Aikman began his monologue, via Awful Announcing. "And we all talk about parity. But when it comes to your hometown team, nobody wants to hear it. And Kevin Stefanski is an outstanding football coach, and he’s proven that. Two-time Coach of the Year. What he did to that group last year to get them in the postseason — they started four quarterbacks, they were decimated with injuries.

"And I get it. You know, this year hasn’t been what people thought coming in, but the albatross is Deshaun Watson. If you go to Jameis Winston earlier in the year, does this look different? Because I would say the defensive struggles, in at least a small part, have had to do with how inept the offense has been moving the football. I think it’s affected the defensive play, as well."

2025 SUPER BOWL ODDS: LIONS HOLD STEADY, COMMANDERS SURGE

Aikman doubled down later in the game when Winston had 355 passing yards and Jerry Jeudy caught six of those passes for 167 yards and a touchdown.

"You can’t help but wonder what this year might have looked like for Cleveland if Jameis had taken over from the start or at least much sooner than when he did," Aikman said. "I know Deshaun Watson goes down with a torn Achilles, but it had been a real struggle offensively watching him."

The Browns’ season is virtually over in terms of playoff contention, but the organization has a lot of evaluation to do at the quarterback position after Watson went 1-6 to start the season before tearing his Achilles against the Cincinnati Bengals Oct. 20.

During those games, Watson threw for 1,148 yards with five touchdowns and three interceptions, while getting sacked 33 times.

Since Winston took over Stefanski’s offense, the Browns have gone 2-3 with the 30-year-old passing for 1,680 yards, 10 touchdowns and seven interceptions in the five games he’s started.

The biggest issue with Watson is the $230 million contract he signed that has him under Cleveland control until the 2027 campaign, when he becomes an unrestricted free agent.

Do the Browns want to see Watson recover and try to find his way again, hoping he can recreate the magic he had in Houston with the Texans? Or does the organization want to move on, especially considering off-the-field allegations that continue even after the numerous civil lawsuits that led to an 11-game suspension in 2022?

The Browns will deliberate over those very questions while evaluating Winston over the team’s final five games, starting with a rematch against the Steelers Sunday in Pittsburgh.

Browns' Jameis Winston prays for the 'Lord to deliver' him from pick-sixes after throwing 2 in their loss

3 December 2024 at 09:25

Cleveland Browns quarterback Jameis Winston was a mixed bag in the team’s 41-32 loss to the Denver Broncos on Monday night.

Winston, 30, threw for a career-high and Browns franchise record 497 yards in the loss with four touchdowns. He also threw three interceptions, including two back-breaking pick-sixes.

After the game, Winston reflected on his up and down performance.

CLICK HERE FOR MORE SPORTS COVERAGE ON FOXNEWS.COM

"In times like this, it’s the opportunity to continue to grow for the lord, even through the toughest circumstances. I know I’m better than this, I know, like I’m just praying for the lord to deliver me from pick-sixes. Like that’s just not me. Like phenomenal game, offense did some great things, but I messed it up," Winston said postgame.

Winston’s first pick-six came with under two minutes left in the second quarter. The Browns were down 14-10, trying to put points on the board before the end of the half.

On first down, after surveying the field, Winston tried to check down to his tight end Jordan Akins. Linebacker Nik Bonitto jumped in front of Akins and intercepted the pass for a 71-yard pick-six.

Winston responded to the pick-six by leading the Browns back down the field and connecting with tight end David Njoku for his second touchdown of the game on a 4-yard pass. The score came just before the first half ended, cutting the Broncos lead to 21-17.

BRONCOS OUTLAST JAMEIS WINSTON'S 497 PASSING YARDS TO BEAT BROWNS IN PRIMETIME

The second pick-six came with under two minutes left in the fourth quarter. The Browns were down 34-32 trying to mount a comeback. Winston targeted wide receiver Elijah Moore on first down, but the pass was undercut by cornerback Ja’Quan McMillan.

McMillan fell but got back up and raced to the end zone, effectively ending the game, putting the Broncos up 41-32 and up by two scores.

Winston throughout his career has been known to be a gunslinger, throwing 152 career touchdown passes to 106 interceptions. In 2019, Winston led the NFL with 5109 passing yards while throwing 33 touchdowns and a whopping 30 interceptions.

Winston’s 497 yards passing in the loss marked the fifth game in his career where Winston has had over 400 yards in a game passing.

Winston is now 2-3 as the Browns' starter since taking over for the injured Deshaun Watson. He has completed 61.3% of his passes for 1763 yards while throwing for 11 touchdowns and seven interceptions.

The Browns fell to 3-9 with the loss, and will take on the Pittsburgh Steelers next, where Winston hopes the lord will have delivered him from more pick-sixes.

Broncos outlast Jameis Winston's 497 passing yards to beat Browns in primetime

2 December 2024 at 20:52

The Denver Broncos picked up a huge win for their playoff chances, taking down the Cleveland Browns, 41-32, in a back-and-forth thriller on "Monday Night Football."

This game was a shootout much like Jameis Winston’s previous nationally televised bout, which ended in victory for the Browns this past Thursday against the Pittsburgh Steelers.

But Bo Nix, not Russell Wilson, was Winston’s opposing quarterback this time, and he continued to show why he’s an Offensive Rookie of the Year frontrunner as he picked apart the Browns’ defense.

On the team’s second drive, Nix was methodical as he dissected the defense, finding fellow rookie DeVaughn Vele for a 16-yard gain that landed the Broncos at the one-yard line. A few plays later, running back Javonte Williams scored the game’s first touchdown to get the home team on the board first.

But leave it to Winston to immediately respond, launching one to Elijah Moore for a 44-yard gain four plays into the next drive to get into the red zone. Then, David Njoku went upstairs to haul in his first of two touchdowns on the night for Cleveland to tie things up 7-7.

The Browns’ offense, though, definitely ran through Jerry Jeudy, who went into this contest against his former team saying he wanted to "whip their a--."

2024 NFL PLAYOFF PICTURE: CHIEFS, BILLS CLINCH BERTHS; WILD RACE IN NFC WEST

He lived up to those words with 235 yards on nine catches, including a 70-yard touchdown that came immediately after Nix had thrown a dot to Marvin Mims Jr. on third-and-11 for a 93-yard touchdown in the third quarter.

After the Broncos kicked a field goal to make it a 31-26 game, Winston was back under center again, this time looking to take the lead for the first time in this game with a touchdown.

That’s exactly what happened, as Nick Chubb was uncovered on his route for a five-yard score.

However, Nix, who has been calm under pressure throughout this season, continued his good performance by getting his team into the red zone once more and Wil Lutz buried a short field goal to retake the lead, 34-32.

Winston had a chance to respond once more, but he threw his second pick-six of the game, as Ja’Quan McMillan stepped into the out route and wasn’t touched after falling to the turf. He walked right into the end zone to pull away late in the fourth quarter.

That was the victory seal for Denver, as Winston and the Browns didn’t have any magic in them to pull spoiler yet again.

Looking at the stat sheet, Nix was 18-for-35 for 294 yards with one touchdown and two interceptions, with Mims (3 catches, 105 yards) and Courtland Sutton (6 catches, 102 yards) leading the team.

On the ground, Jaleel McLaughlin had 84 yards on 14 carries for the Broncos.

For the Browns, Winston had a whopping 497 yards passing on 34-of-58 with Moore also tallying 11 yards on eight catches. Njoku finished with nine receptions for 52 yards and his two scores.

Browns' Jameis Winston rejects mashed potatoes as a Thanksgiving dish, doesn't even want it around

27 November 2024 at 12:35

Cleveland Browns quarterback Jameis Winston won't eat just anything, apparently.

The backup, whose career has been associated with food in the media after a college scandal involving allegedly stolen seafood and a heavier body build, revealed his distaste for mashed potatoes on Wednesday.

Winston said mashed potatoes is a dish that he doesn't even want people to bring to Thanksgiving, in an interview on the "BIG PLAY" podcast.

"I have this thing where, please don't bring mashed potatoes to Thanksgiving," Winston said, denying the notion that the dish is a "staple" of the Thanksgiving meal.

"I really don't think it's a staple, it's mashed potatoes," Winston said. "It's not a Thanksgiving meal… I would really just have a baked potato."

Winston's argument about mashed potatoes not being a Thanksgiving dish would be unfounded to some. But there is some historical contest to support his claim.

Mashed potatoes was not a dish at the first Thanksgiving at Plymoth Rock, Massachusetts, in 1621, according to multiple accounts. In fact, potatoes didn't even come to continental North America until settlers brought them to Virginia around the same time.

BROWNS STAR MYLES GARRETT STICKS UP FOR EMBATTLED DESHAUN WATSON AFTER QB'S SEASON-ENDING INJURY

Potatoes originated in the Andean region of South America, specifically being domesticated by the Inca people, and were brought to North America by European settlers centuries after Christopher Columbus's famous voyage in 1492.

However, potatoes quickly became a common dish at Thanksgiving dinners in the 1860s.

The popular Civil War era journalist and author Josepha Hale campaigned for Congress to officially recognize Thanksgiving. She is considered the individual most responsible for the creation of the national holiday in the U.S. beyond New England, earning her the nickname "Mother of Thanksgiving."

Her writings frequently included mashed potatoes as a dish at the Thanksgiving dinner table, and the vast majority of American families have followed that precedent ever since.

A 2021 IPSOS survey found that mashed potatoes are the most common side dish at Thanksgiving feasts, with 77% of households including it.

Winston's suggestion of baked potatoes was not even included in the survey.

Winston previously revealed his top 10 favorite fast-food restaurants in a social media video in September – 1. Chick-fil-A 2. McDonald’s 3. Dunkin’ Donuts 4. Chipotle 5. Krispy Kreme 6. Papa John’s Pizza 7. Pizza Hut 8. Subway 9. Arby’s 10. Panda Express.

He declined to include chains like KFC or Popeyes, which are among the most popular fast-food restaurants to serve mashed potatoes.

Winston's taste in food has been the subject of coverage dating back to his Heisman college career at Florida State University. He was issued a civil citation for shoplifting on April 29, 2014, after allegedly walking out of a Tallahassee, Florida, supermarket without paying for $32 worth of crab legs and crawfish.

Winston denied the allegations in a statement the following April ahead of that year's NFL Draft, where he was taken with the No. 1 overall pick by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

"I went to the supermarket with the intent to purchase dinner but made a terrible mistake for which I'm taking full responsibility. In a moment of youthful ignorance, I walked out of the store without paying for one of my items," Winston said.

George Pickens blames snow, wind after Browns upset Steelers: 'Conditions played huge, huge part'

22 November 2024 at 17:26

The latest edition of the Pittsburgh Steelers and Cleveland Browns' rivalry was a thriller.

The Steelers entered Thursday night's AFC North game on a five-game winning streak and were widely considered the favorite to win. But Pittsburgh lost 24-19.

Browns star running back Nick Chubb scored a go-ahead touchdown with 57 seconds remaining in the game to help secure Cleveland's victory.

Much of the conversation before, during and after the game centered around the wintry mix players and fans endured.

Steelers star George Pickens, who finished the game with 48 receiving yards, pointed to the weather conditions when he addressed the upset.

BROWNS USE BLIZZARD CONDITIONS TO UPSET AFC NORTH RIVAL STEELERS IN 4TH QUARTER COMEBACK

"Conditions played a huge, huge part in today’s game. I don’t really think the Cleveland Browns are a good team at all," Pickens told reporters after the game. "I think the conditions kind of saved them today.

"The snow, the conditions were so bad," he continued. "I don't even think the QB could see sometimes. And when you got conditions like that, at the opponents' home field, it kind of plays in their favor."

The snowfall picked up in the second half of the game. While the weather conditions were something both teams had to contend with, Pickens' assertion suggests the Steelers fell to 8-3 due to the snow and wind.

Pickens' postgame comments were not the only thing he did to draw attention Thursday night.

On the final play of the game, Steelers quarterback Russell Wilson tossed a Hail Mary toward the end zone. Pickens was in the area of the Hail Mary, but Browns cornerback Greg Newsome II was guarding Pickens and effectively took the wide receiver out of the play.

Cameras missed the beginning of what looked to be a skirmish, but a quick pan appeared to show Pickens and Newsome getting tangled up near the stands. The camera then showed Pickens being held back by two members of stadium security near the seats. One fan was even holding Pickens' arm, leading to initial speculation Pickens was getting into it with fans.

NFL flexes upcoming 'Thursday Night Football' game for first time ever

22 November 2024 at 11:22

For the first time in league history, the NFL is flexing a "Thursday Night Football" game.

The Cleveland Browns and Cincinnati Bengals were scheduled to play the Thursday night game during Week 16, but the NFL is replacing that matchup with the Denver Broncos and the Los Angeles Chargers.

The change is unprecedented because of how drastically different team preparation is between a Thursday and Sunday game.

CLICK HERE FOR MORE SPORTS COVERAGE ON FOXNEWS.COM

Teams and players generally don’t like playing on Thursday because of a lack of recovery time and preparation can lead to injuries.

The Browns defeated the Pittsburgh Steelers 24-19 Thursday to improve to 3-8 and are closer to the No. 1 overall pick in the 2025 NFL Draft than playoff contention.

The Bengals, despite Joe Burrow and Ja’Marr Chase playing well, are 4-7 and have an uphill climb to make the playoffs.

GIANTS MUTUALLY AGREE TO RELEASE DANIEL JONES AS QUARTERBACK’S TUMULTUOUS TENURE COMES TO AN END

The Chargers (7-3) and Broncos (6-5) both occupy playoff spots in the AFC and their Week 16 matchup could be pivotal for determining seeding, not to mention better ratings for the NFL.

The current seeding in the AFC:

1. Kansas City Chiefs (9-1)

2. Buffalo Bills (9-2)

3. Pittsburgh Steelers (8-3)

4. Houston Texans (7-4)

5. Los Angeles Chargers (7-3)

6. Baltimore Ravens (7-4)

7. Denver Broncos (6-5)

The Indianapolis Colts (5-6) and Miami Dolphins (4-6) are on the outside looking in.

The Chargers will be home for the Thursday night matchup against the Broncos Dec.19. Both teams are home the prior week, potentially another reason the NFL made the schedule change.

Steelers' George Pickens gets into it with Browns player on final play of blizzard game, held back by security

22 November 2024 at 04:16

An AFC North rivalry had another page added to its long book of ugly history on Thursday night.

The Cleveland Browns squeaked out a win over the Pittsburgh Steelers in blizzard conditions on their home turf, but as soon as the game ended, things turned sour for two players.

Russell Wilson was aiming for the end zone on the final play of the game, and his pass fell incomplete to give the Browns a 24-19 victory.

Wide receiver George Pickens was guarded well by Greg Newsome II, totally taking him out of the play. Apparently, they started to get into it.

Cameras missed the beginning of what looked to be an ugly skirmish, but a quick pan appeared to show the two getting tangled up by the stands.

The camera then showed Pickens being held back by two members of stadium security near the seats. One fan was even holding Pickens' arm, leading to initial speculation that Pickens was getting into it with fans.

Newsome is eventually seen standing up from the ground and walking away from the ruckus.

It is not the first time Pickens' temper has gotten out of hand. In his rookie season, he yelled at coaches after a teammate dropped a pass.

Last season, he was called out for what appeared to be a lack of effort.

Even just a month ago, he was caught grabbing the facemask of an opponent in the middle of a celebration.

"You know we are all frustrated, but we've got to manage our frustrations in a professional, mature way. And when it’s not done that way, it’s not necessarily pushing us toward solutions," Steelers head coach Mike Tomlin said last year regarding Pickens' sideline outbursts at the time.

The Browns initially blew a 10-point lead, but Jameis Winston led a game-winning drive in the game's final minutes. Nick Chubb scored twice, including the game-winning touchdown, as the Browns got their third win of the season.

Pittsburgh, meanwhile, suffered their third loss of the season opposite their eight victories.

Browns use blizzard conditions to upset AFC North rival Steelers in 4th quarter comeback

22 November 2024 at 04:11

The league’s first snow game of the season appeared to be a low-scoring bout at first, but a fourth-quarter thriller ensued in the harsh conditions as the Cleveland Browns upset the Pittsburgh Steelers, 24-19, in a wild AFC North battle.

The Browns moved to 3-8 on the season, while the Steelers are now 8-3.

High winds, a temperature that felt below 30 degrees and tons of snow were dumped on Huntington Bank Field throughout this contest, and both teams were attempting to get acclimated to the conditions that continued to get worse as time ticked on the clock.

The Steelers found themselves down two scores after Jameis Winston powered his way into the end zone on fourth-and-goal to make it 18-6 after a failed two-point conversion.

However, Russell Wilson and the Steelers’ offense, which had not scored a touchdown all game to this point, knew it was now or never early in the fourth quarter to get moving.

BROWNS' MYLES GARRETT HAS WORDS FOR STEELERS' TJ WATT AHEAD OF AFC NORTH BATTLE

After seven plays, Jaylen Warren scored on the ground from three yards out to make it 18-13, with a touchdown all that was needed to take the lead.

First, the Steelers’ defense had to get the ball back from Winston and company, and while a punt would have sufficed, Nick Herbig had something else in mind.

On the second play of the drive, Herbig strip-sacked Winston and the ball was recovered on Cleveland’s 27-yard line. Three plays later, Wilson threw a dot to Calvin Austin in the back of the end zone to make it a 19-18 game.

However, the Browns, with fans braving the weather in the stands to cheer them on, found life on their final drive of the game, where Nick Chubb scored his second touchdown of the game with 57 seconds left on the clock to go up five points after the two-point conversion failed.

Chubb, who found the end zone with four minutes left in the second quarter, as well, finished the game with 59 yards on 20 rush attempts.

His score, however, would not have come without Jerry Jeudy hauling in a fourth-and-3 pass to move the chains earlier in the drive, while also going for 15 yards on third-and-6 to land on Pittsburgh’s 15-yard line to set up Chubb’s score. Jeudy finished the game with a team-high 85 yards on six catches.

Wilson had a last-ditch effort to try to retake the lead, attempting to keep the Steelers’ five-game win streak alive. But his efforts were all for naught. He finished the game with 261 yards passing on 20-of-26 with his touchdown to Austin, who had 69 yards on just two catches.

For the Browns, Winston was 18-of-27 through the air for 219 yards.

Browns' Myles Garrett has words for Steelers' TJ Watt ahead of AFC North battle

20 November 2024 at 09:11

Cleveland Browns and Pittsburgh Steelers defensive stars hyped up the AFC North battle that’s set to take place on Thursday night.

Browns defensive end Myles Garrett was named the 2023 Defensive Player of the Year as he secured 14 sacks and 42 total tackles in 16 games on his way to a fourth consecutive Pro Bowl selection. He received 23 first-place votes and narrowly won over Pittsburgh Steelers star T.J. Watt.

Watt led the NFL in sacks with 19 and had 48 total tackles in 17 games. He appeared to be upset with the alleged snub and expressed his feelings in a social media post, saying "nothing I’m not used to."

Garrett told reporters Tuesday he thought Watt should apologize after he didn’t reach out to congratulate the Browns star.

"No, he didn't say nothing to me. He's got to apologize to me when I see him," he said.

Garrett explained he was never one to complain about losing out on an award.

"I've never complained about the trophy not being in my house and vice versa," he added, via NFL.com. "He shouldn't be feeling two ways about it going to me. So, I'm just going to play the game, I don't play against T.J., he doesn't play against me. But we have a plan to go out and do what we're supposed to, win the game and dominate on defense. But it's up for grabs this year, and we'll see the best man win."

Watt took an opportunity to praise Garrett’s abilities on the football field.

"I have respect for everybody in the league. Obviously, he's a guy who has been a top pass rusher in the league for a long time," he said, via the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review. "But I don't compete directly against him. It's our team versus their team, and at the end of the day, I just want the Pittsburgh Steelers to come out with a win."

The two star defenders are going head-to-head again for the Defensive Player of the Year award.

Garrett has seven sacks and 23 tackles in 10 games. Watt has 7.5 sacks and 36 tackles. He also leads the NFL in forced fumbles with four.
