American figure skater sets record straight on viral rumor amid airline tragedy

30 January 2025 at 04:52

American figure skater Jon Maravilla set the record straight on a story that went viral amid the airline disaster that occurred near Reagan International Airport on Wednesday night.

Maravilla told The Daily Beast in an interview on Thursday he was denied from his flight because of his dog but he was set to fly out of Detroit and not Wichita, Kansas, where the doomed flight originated from. Media reports from Russia originally claimed he was supposed to be on the plane, pointing to Instagram posts from his personal account.

He told the outlet it was unclear where the reports came from but he was heartbroken over the fate of some of his friends.

"I still can’t believe it," he told the outlet. "I was just with them watching them have lots of fun and just enjoying their time."

He added that he was in a parking lot when he started to learn the flight that collided with a U.S. Army helicopter had originated from Wichita.

Officials said Thursday there were no survivors of the crash and that the mission went from a rescue operation to a recovery operation. Nearly 30 bodies were pulled from the Potomac River.

At least six of those who died in the crash had ties to the Skating Club of Boston.

The Skating Club of Boston CEO Doug Zeghibe identified those with ties to the club as athletes, Jinna Han and Spencer Lane, two coaches, Vadim Naumov and Evgenia Shishkova, and Jin Han, the mother of Jinna, and Molly Lane, the mother of Spencer, were identified as the victims with ties to the skate club.

"Our sport and this Club have suffered a horrible loss with this tragedy," Zeghibe said in a statement posted to social media. "Skating is a tight-knit community where parents and kids come together 6 of 7 days a week to train and work together. Everyone is like family. Of the skaters, coaches and parents on the plane, we believe six were from The Skating Club of Boston. We are devastated and completely at a loss for words.

"These athletes, coaches, parents were returning from U.S. Figure Skating’s National Development Camp, following last week’s U.S. Championships in Wichita. This camp is for young competitive skaters of tomorrow with the promise to be a champion of tomorrow. The club sent 18 athletes to compete at the U.S. Championships. It sent 12 athletes to the National Development Camp."

Figure skating community mourns victims of deadly plane crash collision: ‘At a loss for words’

30 January 2025 at 08:22

Members of the figure skating community have spoken out after an American Airlines flight tragically collided with an Army helicopter late Wednesday night in Washington, D.C., leaving all 67 on board both aircraft presumably dead.

U.S. Figure Skating released a statement confirming that "several members of our skating community" were aboard the flight. The organization said they were returning home from a development camp being held after the U.S. Figure Skating Championships in Wichita, Kansas, which concluded on Sunday.

"We are devastated by this unspeakable tragedy and hold the victims' families closely in our hearts. We will continue to monitor the situation and will release more information as it becomes available."

Wichita Mayor Lily Wu did not confirm how many members of U.S. Figure Skating were on board Flight 5342 during a press conference on Thursday morning.

"It was truly an honor to have future Olympians and those who are at the highest competition level of figure skating, right here in our capital," she said.

"We were so excited to have the opportunity to host the national championship, and even yesterday I had folks tell me how wonderful these last few days have been with additional individuals that came into our community, whether to watch or to participate. So our community was really excited and thankful that everything went well with the championship. And so right now we're just waiting for more information from U.S. Figure Skating that we can release. But right now we're just hoping and praying again."

First responders switched to recovery efforts in the Potomac River after it was believed that there were no survivors. There were 60 passengers and four crew members aboard the flight and three soldiers aboard the UH-60 Black Hawk helicopter.

AMERICAN FIGURE SKATER SAYS HE WAS BARRED FROM FLIGHT THAT COLLIDED WITH ARMY HELICOPTER

"This is heartbreaking," Team USA figure skater Josphine Lee wrote in a post to her Instagram Stories. "My thoughts and prayers go out to everyone on the flight, including the skaters, coaches, and parents."

Team USA pair skater Luke Wang shared a similar sentiment in a post on X.

"Praying for all those on the flight from wichita to dc. Among the passengers were skaters and coaches. Absolutely heartbreaking."

Several other Team U.S. figure skaters also took to social media.

"Words cannot fathom the fear and sadness I feel from this event," reigning pairs U.S. junior champion Hana Maria Aboian said early Thursday morning. "It is absolutely terrible and I pray for all the athletes, coaches, and everyone onboard to be safe and healthy."

"I am at a loss for words... I can't even explain how devastated I feel for the loss of amazing people that were on this flight. I'm sending prayers to their families and the figure skating community," Starr Andrews said.

The International Skating Union also released a statement.

"Our thoughts are with everyone affected by this tragedy. Figure skating is more than a sport—it’s a close-knit family—and we stand together. We remain in close contact with U.S. Figure Skating and offer our full support during this incredibly difficult time," the statement read in part.

Two former Olympians, Evgenia Shishkova and Vadim Naumov, were also believed to be among the victims of the plane crash, the Kremlin confirmed.

Naumov and Shishkova competed in pairs during their careers. They won a pairs title at the 1994 world championships and competed at the Winter Olympics twice.

U.S. Figure Skating said there were members of its organization on board as well.

"U.S. Figure Skating can confirm that several members of our skating community were sadly aboard American Airlines Flight 5342, which collided with a helicopter yesterday evening in Washington, D.C.," the organization said earlier Thursday. WWE star ‘feeling in danger’ after scary ‘romantic’ advances during fan interactions

30 January 2025 at 05:25

WWE superstar Asuka, the four-time world champion, said she has recently felt in danger and has contacted the police regarding fan interactions that have had "romantic" advances involved.

Asuka, whose real name is Kanako Urai, is a Japanese professional wrestler who sent out multiple posts on her X account Wednesday, when she expressed her feelings about recent fan interactions that had been taken too far in her eyes.

"I’ve been feeling in danger recently," she wrote on X. "I’ve already consulted the police. At this rate, even if fans approach me at the airport or in the city, I will feel the possibility that something might happen, and it will scare me, making me unable to respond."

While Asuka did not talk about a specific interaction she had with fans, she did express her want for fans to stop having "romantic feelings for me."

"It’s meaningless – 100% pointless," she wrote in a separate post.

"There is absolutely no possibility for others to interfere in my private life."

It is worth noting this is not the first time a WWE star has dealt with fans who take their love for the sport and brand too far.

Fellow star Sonya Deville had an obsessed fan of hers drive from his home in South Carolina to Tampa Bay, Florida, where she lived, with the intent of abducting her. The man, Phillip Thomas, carried a knife, zip ties, duct tape and mace, and broke into her home.

A plea deal was ultimately struck for 15 years in prison in 2023 after the incident in 2020, when Thomas was charged with attempted kidnapping, aggravated stalking and armed burglary.

Asuka, 43, has not been wrestling of late, as she suffered an injury in May 2024, which required knee surgery.

Asuka is the longest-reigning NXT women’s champion, and she’s also won the Royal Rumble and Money in the Bank in her career, which began in 2015.

American figure skater's eerie social media post sparks concern after plane collides with Army helicopter

30 January 2025 at 05:17

An American figure skater’s social media post sparked concern about his whereabouts as it appeared he was on the plane that collided with a U.S. Army helicopter on Wednesday night.

Spencer Lane posted a photo on his Instagram while the American Airlines flight was on the runway at Wichita Dwight D. Eisenhower National Airport. The plane appeared to be waiting to take off for Reagan International Airport near Washington, D.C.

"ICT (to) DCA," the post on his Instagram Stories read.

Lane did not post anything else after that. Another post on his Instagram Stories showed him warming up with Kohaku Murai. He had also shared a collage of pictures with other team members who were in Wichita, Kansas.

American figure skater says he was barred from flight that collided with Army helicopter

30 January 2025 at 04:52

An American figure skater was barred from the American Airlines flight that collided with a U.S. Army helicopter near Reagan International Airport on Thursday night.

Jon Maravilla told Russia’s Sputnik he was not allowed on the flight because his dog was too big to board. He said he ultimately decided to make the 14-hour drive back from Wichita, Kansas, to Washington, D.C. He also mentioned the issue on his personal Instagram account.

"Not allowed past gate to board flight," he wrote in one post. "Get me tf out of Kansas please."

He added, "14 hour journey begins."

Maravilla told RIA Novosti that there were "about 14 figure skaters on the plane, not counting their parents and coaches," according to The New York Times.

World champion Russian figure skaters aboard flight involved in midair collision, Kremlin says

30 January 2025 at 04:06

Evgenia Shishkova and Vadim Naumov were a Russian figure skating pair who competed in multiple Olympic Games and medaled in multiple world championships.

The Kremlin said Thursday the figure skating stars were among those aboard an American Airlines flight that collided with a U.S. Army helicopter near Reagan International Airport on Wednesday night.

Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said Shishkova and Naumov were on the plane.

"Unfortunately, we see that this sad information is being confirmed. There were other fellow citizens there. Bad news today from Washington. We are sorry and send condolences to the families and friends who lost those of our fellow citizens who died in the plane crash," he said.

It was Naumov’s coach who introduced the pair in 1985, wanting them to work together despite Naumov rebuffing the idea at first. They began to work together in 1987 and competed and won bronze in the 1991 European Championships while representing the former Soviet Union. The pair would go on to win two more bronze and silver medals in the event.

Later Thursday, Skating Club of Boston CEO Doug Zeghibe identified the couple as those who were lost in the crash.

"Our sport and this Club have suffered a horrible loss with this tragedy," Zeghibe said in a statement posted to social media. "Skating is a tight-knit community where parents and kids come together 6 of 7 days a week to train and work together. Everyone is like family. It sent 12 athletes to the National Development Camp."

Shishkova and Naumov earned accolades on the world stage as well. At the 1993 World Championships, the two earned a bronze medal. The following year in Chiba, Japan, the two picked up their first gold medal. They finished with a silver in 1995 in Birmingham, United Kingdom.

The pair competed in the 1992 Olympics in Albertville, France, and the 1994 Olympics in Lillehammer, Norway. They finished in fifth in 1992 and fourth in 1994.

Shishkova and Naumov married in Saint Petersburg, Russia, in 1995, and they moved to Connecticut. They had a son, Maxim, who competed in men’s singles in the U.S.

The Russian pair were listed as professional pairs coaches on the Skating Club of Boston’s website.

Chiefs' Travis Kelce floats 'conspiracy' his brother 'can get behind'

30 January 2025 at 03:30

Prior to the Philadelphia Eagles' 55-23 drubbing of the Washington Commanders in the NFC Championship, the famous Rocky statue in downtown Philadelphia was wearing Commanders gear.

Actually, the statue was dressed in Redskins garb, the Commanders' former identity.

But Travis Kelce isn’t buying into the fact that the opposing team’s fans are the ones dressing up the "Rocky" statue.

"I’m fully aware of the fact that it happens every single meaningful game, I don’t think it’s the other team doing it at this point," Kelce said during a recent episode of "New Heights."

Jason Kelce, former Eagles star center and avid supporter of the team, proposed who might be dressing up the statue.

"You think the Eagles are doing it?" Jason asked.

"100%," Travis responded

The Rocky statue has been dressed numerous times in opposing team’s colors, with each occasion normally leading an Eagles victory.

When the Eagles won the Super Bowl over the New England Patriots, someone put a Tom Brady jersey on the statue.

During the Eagles run to the Super Bowl in 2023, Rocky was dressed in both New York Giants and San Francisco 49ers gear before the Eagles dismantled both teams en route to the big game.

Jason then referenced a Kansas City Chiefs shirt on Rocky ahead of the Eagles-Chiefs Super Bowl matchup in 2023, but Travis expressed skepticism that a Chiefs fan was the culprit.

"Yeah that was Chiefs gear," Travis said doubtfully, "It was like a red shirt that said Chiefs on it."

"They like wrote Chiefs in Sharpie or something. It’s got to be Philly, it’s got to be Eagles fans."

EAGLES FAN, 18, DIES AFTER FALL FROM LIGHT POLE DURING CELEBRATION

Jason supported Travis's theory, saying that it’s "a conspiracy I can get behind."

Travis thinks the motivation for dressing Rocky up in the opposing team’s gear is to get Eagles fans riled up.

"They’re just firing up the entire city, getting it nice and rowdy," Kelce said.

Rocky has not yet been dressed in Chiefs gear, but there is still plenty of time before kickoff in the Super Bowl

Kelce’s Chiefs will take on the Eagles in Super Bowl LIX at 6:30 p.m. ET on Feb. 9 on FOX.

Super Bowl champion hopes fans appreciate Chiefs' greatness, not hate on it

30 January 2025 at 02:30

The Kansas City Chiefs haterade is being served triple this year after reaching their third consecutive Super Bowl.

The back-to-back reigning champions are one win away from becoming the first team to ever three-peat, and despite putting their name among the greatest dynasties in sports, a large majority of football fans can't wait for it to end.

However, one former NFL great has no issues with the Chiefs' success, knowing how difficult it is to do what the Chiefs have been doing.

Clay Matthews, who won a Super Bowl, says it's easier for him, as opposed to the average fan, to appreciate the Chiefs' greatness rather than hate on it.

"I don't think people understand how difficult it is. Unlike maybe in some other sports where there's no salary cap, and certain teams dominate football, because of the salary cap, because of the parody within the league, it’s so difficult to stay on top," Matthews told Fox News Digital in a recent interview. "And for [Tom] Brady to do that for so long, and now [Patrick] Mahomes to do that within his first seven years, it's remarkable.

"So I look at it as just enjoy the show, and I hope everybody is as well."

Matthews knows how difficult it really is, and how grateful the Chiefs should be, considering fans in the early 2010s thought the Aaron Rodgers-led Packers would be the next great dynasty. Matthews called Rodgers "arguably the greatest talent" at the quarterback position, but even they couldn't get over the hump more than once.

"We were only able to make one Super Bowl. … So I firsthand know how difficult it is to get back to the Super Bowl. So for him to be able to do this year and year out, it's almost like a cheat code, but the reality is it takes so much more than just us at home saying it’s unfair," Matthews added.

EX-NFL STAR CLAY MATTHEWS DISCUSSES RESPONSIBLE GUN OWNERSHIP AS A FATHER, RAISING SONS TO BE HUNTERS

"I grew up in the Kobe [Bryant] era, the Lakers era where they were winning championships, and I'm sure everybody was hating. When the Yankees were winning, I was hating on them because I was a Dodgers fan," the Southern California native continued. "So whereas I wasn't involved in professional athletics, it's a lot easier to hate on the couch as a fan.

"Being a former player and, you know, football as well is just such a difficult sport. I mean, the physicality of it, the war of attrition, everything that goes into it to get to this point right now, it's truly remarkable. So, yes, I do appreciate it a lot more than perhaps others who haven't played the game do."

Maybe it will be a different story, though, if the Chiefs go to four in a row.

Brandon Marshall on Josh Allen's woes against Patrick Mahomes: 'Sometimes you run into a Michael Jordan'

30 January 2025 at 01:00

As Patrick Mahomes and the Kansas City Chiefs head to their third straight Super Bowl, NFL fans can't help but feel for the Buffalo Bills and quarterback Josh Allen.

The Chiefs can make history in New Orleans on Feb. 9 by winning their third straight Super Bowl. That history has come at the expense of Allen, who is 0-4 in postseason games against Mahomes and the Chiefs.

As good as Allen is — he's an MVP frontrunner alongside Baltimore Ravens quarterback Lamar Jackson this year — he has been unable to get the Bills back to the Super Bowl for the first time in over three decades.

And his postgame interview after falling to the Chiefs 32-29 showed his raw emotion. He was short with his answers and looked dejected.

SIGN UP FOR TUBI AND STREAM SUPER BOWL LIX FOR FREE

One ex-NFL star, though, broke down Allen's challenge of having to get through Mahomes to achieve the team's goals to other sports greats.

"Sometimes you run into a Michael Jordan. Sometimes you run into a Tiger Woods in their prime, and you got to deal with it," former All-Pro wide receiver Brandon Marshall told Fox News Digital while discussing his new venture with his "I Am Athlete" partnering with Revolt.

"If these guys can pull off one or two, then that’s what they can do. But [Mahomes has] been in the league eight years and been to the Super Bowl five times.

"Great job, Josh Allen, but this is the wrong era to be a quarterback."

CLICK HERE FOR MORE SPORTS COVERAGE ON FOXNEWS.COM

Marshall said that was "no knock" against Allen, Jackson, Joe Burrow or even C.J. Stroud with his Houston Texans falling to the Chiefs in the divisional round.

But as good as Basketball Hall of Famer Karl Malone was with the Utah Jazz, they couldn't beat Jordan and the Bulls in the two NBA Finals they played. And when Woods was in his golfing prime, some players accepted that finishing second place any given week was an accomplishment because Woods would likely be lifting the trophy.

It's the unfortunate result of greatness. Someone or some team has to lose.

Marshall described Mahomes and the Chiefs as a "once-in-a-lifetime" phenomenon to watch in sports, and it's not just because of the two-time MVP.

"There’s a few people. There’s Patrick Mahomes. It shows his greatness," Marshall explained. "It shows Andy Reid’s greatness, and they both need to be in the conversation of the greatest quarterback of all-time and also the greatest coach of all-time, challenging Tom Brady and Bill Belichick.

"Another person that we have to include in this conversation since he’s taken over this defense is Steve Spagnuolo. Before he got there in 2018, this defense was dead last. It was one of the worst defenses in the league for a few years. Insert Coach Spags. Now they’re top 10, and they’re doing a phenomenal job, which results in Patrick Mahomes being more of a game manager.

"He’s still spectacular and magical, but he doesn’t need to go out there and put up 40 points. He doesn’t need to go out there … he doesn’t even need Tyreek Hill."

Allen's numbers in the last three Bills games against the Chiefs in the playoffs are outstanding: 931 total yards, nine touchdowns and no interceptions. Yet, he's lost them all.

Like Marshall said, it's not a knock on Allen. It's just clearly showing how great Mahomes and this Chiefs dynasty is it looks to make history against the Philadelphia Eagles.

PUSHING BOUNDARIES WITH REVOLT

Marshall loves watching and discussing the league he played in 13 seasons and other sports and culture with his "I Am Athlete" sports media platform. But he feels he’s going to take it to the next level with the brand’s partnership with Revolt, the Black-owned multimedia platform that announced its launch of Revolt Sports.

Marshall, with media personality and cultural commentator Kayla Nicole as a co-host, will be featured on Revolt Sports Weekly powered by "I am Athlete," which will feature unscripted discussions with the duo and other celebrity contributors from the top stories in sports to the hottest cultural topics.

The first episode, which featured Marshall’s former UCF teammates, Josh "Beezo" Bellamy and Mike Sims-Walker, discussed the NFL’s conference championship matchups, while also going deep on whether celebrating rapper Big Meech with a welcome back party next month after spending 16 years in jail for drug trafficking and money laundering is right for the community.

"People want the real. They want authentic, and that’s what our culture is," Marshall explained. "These are the conversations we’ve been having in the locker room since sports were established. It’s the same conversations we have in the salons and barbershops. This is the same conversation we have on the stoops on the block, same conversations.

"’I Am Athlete’ lives at the intersection of hip-hop and sports. So, talking about things that are relevant to the culture — pop culture, whatever you have it — is just a general conversation that is natural to us. That’s what you’ll get from this show every single week. We’ll dive into the hottest topics in sports and also the biggest stories in pop culture."

Ex-NFL star Julian Edelman slams Chiefs’ referee favoritism: ‘Bunch of bull-oney’

Ex-NFL star Julian Edelman slams Chiefs’ referee favoritism: ‘Bunch of bull-oney’

Former NFL wide receiver Julian Edelman heard it all when he was playing for the New England Patriots when it came to referees always being on their side.

The Kansas City Chiefs are going through the same thing as they’re on the cusp of history, as they could be the first team ever to win three straight Super Bowls. Not even Edelman and the Tom Brady-led Patriots were able to accomplish that during their dynasty.

SIGN UP FOR TUBI AND STREAM SUPER BOWL LIX FOR FREE

During an appearance on "The Rich Eisen Show," Edelman was asked by the program’s namesake if he'd heard about the referee favoritism conspiracy theories going around during this year’s playoff run, specifically when it came to his own experience dealing with that during his days in Foxborough.

"It’s apparent when you’re on top, everyone wants to bring you down," Edelman responded. "It’s a bunch of baloney that the league is helping the Kansas City Chiefs. If you have a problem with it, go beat ‘em. The refs aren’t involved when you throw interceptions, when you fumble the ball, when you jump offsides, when you don’t convert third down or fourth down. They can’t control that. If you want to beat ‘em, go beat ‘em. Don’t talk about it – be about it. I’m so sick and tired about people saying that about the Chiefs."

CLICK HERE FOR MORE SPORTS COVERAGE ON FOXNEWS.COM

Edelman faced similar criticism during his time with the Patriots from 2009-2020, where he was a three-time Super Bowl champion (2014, 2016, 2018). Fans would theorize that the referees were favoring Brady and the Patriots throughout those Super Bowl runs, but Edelman shed some reality on the situation.

"We all have scouting reports on each ref crew and how they like to [call] the game," he said. "You learn about it during that first part of that game.  If they’re calling it tight, you tighten back. If they’re not, you just hope they’re consistent throughout the whole thing, which they usually are.

"Yes, they miss calls and they do these things, and there’s some bad calls here and there. But there’s a handful of roughing the passers for guys that don’t even have a resume that you looked at this year that got the call. If it’s close, leave it alone. Yeah, they’ll probably have to address that sideline awareness stuff, but these whole graphics about, ‘Oh, they get the call, and they don’t give the call to them.’ Because they’re coached better."

Because of the dynasty talk revolving around the Chiefs, the natural comparison to the Patriots, which was the league’s last dynasty, have been made.

Eisen asked Edelman if he sees any similarities between his Patriots teams and the Chiefs in recent years.

It all comes down to getting the job done in clutch situations.

"They’re situational tight," Edelman said. "You watch them on third down, you watch them in the red area. A lot of these games when you get to this time of the year, they’re not won by the team that makes the most plays. Yeah, that’s part of it. It’s always the team that makes the least amount of mistakes. That’s what they do. They play mistake-free, they play situationally tight, they’ll lull you to sleep, and then they’ll beat you when they need to. That’s stuff we used to do."

School reacts to video of official telling parents to alter trans kid's birth certificate to play girls sports

29 January 2025 at 19:43

A Texas school district has acknowledged footage of one of its administrators telling an undercover journalist posing as a parent to change a transgender child's birth certificate to compete in girls sports.

The Irving Independent School District in Irving, Texas, has provided a statement to Fox News Digital addressing the recent video of Reny Lizardo, the executive director of campus operations, giving this guidance, which was obtained by Accuracy in Media.

The statement indicates Lizardo has resigned from his position.

"In Irving ISD, we are committed to upholding the requirements of state and federal laws, especially as it pertains to ensuring the safety and well-being of our students, and we will cooperate with any investigation initiated by relevant authorities," the statement said.

"We are aware of the unauthorized video footage circulating on social media of an individual connected with Irving ISD. The videos were obtained under false pretenses by an individual who posed as a concerned parent and additional individuals who posed as family friends of the employee pictured.

"The individuals also held themselves out as members of the media, but were not credentialed as such, constituting a breach of security. In addition, the footage has been edited and is an incomplete representation of the entire conversation, making it difficult to properly assess its probative value."

In the footage, Lizardo said, "It’s not illegal if you don’t get caught," with regard to changing the gender on a child's birth certificate, and "if you can get that done, and you turn us a birth certificate that says ‘this gender,’ that's the gender we go with."

While discussing potential repercussions of the discussion, Lizardo suggested pleading plausible deniability.

The district insists Lizardo's handling of the situation does not reflect the values and protocols of the school district.

Fox News Digital has reached out to Lizardo for comment.

HOW TRANSGENDERISM IN SPORTS SHIFTED THE 2024 ELECTION AND IGNITED A NATIONAL COUNTERCULTURE

"We want to reiterate that Irving ISD complies with all state and federal laws, and all employees are expected to adhere to any and all legal and ethical standards. The message conveyed in the video, as presented, does not reflect the views nor policies of the district," the statement said.

"Individual employees do not speak on behalf of the district. The individual identified was acting outside of his role as it relates to legal and regulatory expertise. While the matter continues to be under investigation, the individual identified in the video has tendered his resignation."

The district's statement concludes by claiming all of its athletes participate in the proper gender category.

"We can also confirm that all Irving ISD student-athletes are participating in their sport in accordance with the sex they were assigned at birth," the district said. "Irving ISD is unwavering in our commitment to the safety and well-being of all of our students and staff. We remain focused on our primary function to maintain educational excellence and foster the full potential of our students."

Texas is one of 25 states in the U.S. with a law that prevents or restricts transgender athletes from competing against girls and women. In June 2023, the state passed the Save Women's Sports Act that prohibits transgender athletes from competing in girls and women's sports and only allows students to compete in the gender category listed on their birth certificate.

The law only allows schools to recognize changes made to birth certificates that were made to correct a clerical error.

Texas Gov. Greg Abbott addressed the footage involving Lizardo in a post on X and called for him to be fired and investigated.

"This Irving ISD Administrator should be fired on the spot. Both criminal & civil investigations must be taken against both the Administrator & Irving ISD," Abbott wrote. "Has Irving ISD and its employees been involved in a fraudulent breach of state laws & a cover up? We must get the facts."

NBA Commish Adam Silver says he supports the idea of switching to 'four, 10-minute quarters'

29 January 2025 at 18:00

Just over half of the NBA season has passed, and Commissioner Adam Silver's search for ways to improve the league appears in full swing.

This week, Silver floated a drastic rule change for the length of quarters during NBA games.

The NBA plays 12-minute quarters. If the NBA were to adopt a Silver proposal, those periods would be reduced by two minutes. Ten-minute quarters would take eight minutes off the game clock.

Silver noted that the reduction could create a more "consistent" presentation for basketball fans who watch games on TV.

"I am a fan of four, 10-minute quarters," Silver told "The Dan Patrick Show" when asked about the more drastic ideas the NBA has considered.

"I'm not sure that many others are ... putting aside what it means for records and things like that. I think that a two-hour format for a game is more consistent with modern television habits. People in arenas aren't asking us to shorten the game, but ... as a television program, Olympic basketball is two hours. College basketball is 40 minutes."

At one point, Silver cited the length of games played in other leagues around the world.

"The NBA is the only (basketball) league that plays 48 minutes. ... It's such a dramatic change to the game. … Something like that would have to be talked more about over time."

NBA TRADE DEADLINE: DE'AARON FOX WANTS OUT; JIMMY BUTLER STILL ON THE BLOCK

During the Summer Olympics, basketball games last 40 minutes. College basketball games in the U.S. are divided into 20-minute halves.

"Because this game is so global, one of the things we'd like to see over time is creating a more consistent set of rules globally around the game," Silver said.

Silver noted that shaving two minutes off quarters could reduce the wear and tear on players over a 82-game season, while potentially helping the league combat its "load management" issue.

"Incidentally, if you went to a 40-minute game — with the issues around load management and resting — it would be the equivalent of … taking like 15 games off the season," Silver said.

Silver made it clear the ideas he mentioned during the exchange with Patrick had merely been discussed, but they are nowhere near being adopted.

"It's not quite at that level," he said.

Silver also praised Major League Baseball for adding a pitch clock. He argued the change helped "speed up the game," while also keeping traditional aspects of the game in place.

"I'm a baseball fan, and I think some of those changes have really increased sort of the engagement … the entertainment value of the game, and so I'm paying a lot of attention to that," Silver said.

"And, in fact, I've used the pitch clock … in meetings at the NBA to say … we shouldn't be afraid to look at changes."

Pat Mahomes Sr. claims he was victimized by social media hack after perceived Bills insult

29 January 2025 at 15:13

Pat Mahomes Sr., the father of two-time NFL MVP Patrick Mahomes, is back in the spotlight.

The elder Mahomes contends he was not responsible for a recent comment posted to his social media account, which appeared to reference the Buffalo Bills.

"Today is a great day to not be from Buffalo," Mahomes Sr.'s X account said after the Kansas City Chiefs' victory over the Bills in Sunday's AFC championship game.

The former MLB pitcher later took to his Instagram account to try and clear the air by asserting he was the victim of a social media hack.

"Haven’t been on Twitter/X in years," Mahomes Sr. wrote. "My account was hacked and I do not have access to it. Pls disregard any tweets from @pmahomes."

He added another statement to his Instagram account.

"Attention: Patrick Mahomes Sr.’s X account has been compromised," the Instagram post said. "The Mahomes family holds the utmost respect for the Buffalo Bills organization and the #BillsMafia fan base. We are actively working to resolve this issue. Thank you for your understanding."

Mahomes Sr. also offered an apology in an Instagram story post, writing, "Sorry for the misunderstanding. Would never."

The account in question appears to have been moderately active over the past several months after an extended period of virtually no posts dating back to December 2022. The account has shared about six posts since June 2024.

It was unclear whether any of the six most recent posts were compromised.

Some of the account's previous posts reference MLB icon Willie Mays. The baseball legend died at the age of 93 in June. The social media page also features pictures of the elder Mahomes wearing his Minnesota Twins jersey and the Chiefs quarterback when he was a baby.

This is not the first time Mahomes Sr. has made headlines. In August 2024, he pleaded guilty to a charge of driving while intoxicated and was sentenced to five years probation.

Tyler, Texas, news station KLTV reported that Mahomes Sr. would have to continue attending Alcoholics Anonymous meetings as a condition of the deal. He also had to serve 10 days in jail.

Police footage obtained by TMZ last year showed Pat Mahomes Sr. pleading with officers and mentioning his son's name multiple times during a February 2024 arrest.

"Can I say one thing?" Mahomes Sr. said. "My son is getting ready to play in the f---ing Super Bowl."

Bills star Dawson Knox gives 'all the glory to Jesus' even after AFC Championship loss

29 January 2025 at 14:37

Buffalo Bills tight end Dawson Knox is leaning on his faith in both good times and bad.

The Bills were knocked out of the playoffs after suffering a narrow loss to the Kansas City Chiefs in the AFC Championship game on Sunday. MVP front-runner Josh Allen fell to 0-4 against Patrick Mahomes in the playoffs as the Chiefs move on to the Super Bowl, where they’ll attempt to make history.

Despite the heartbreaking end, Knox spoke openly about his faith and his optimism for next season.

"I think it's easy to be all happy and praise the Lord in the good times, but I wanna give all the glory to Jesus," Knox. "He’s the reason I’m here, and I’ve got so much gratitude for this building and everybody in here that makes this team so special for this whole city. There’s truly nowhere else I’d rather be."

RAVENS FANS RETURN KIND GESTURE, DONATE THOUSANDS TO DALTON KINCAID CHARITY AFTER CRUCIAL DROP IN BILLS’ LOSS

Knox acknowledged that change in the offseason is inevitable, but added that he believes the Bills will be back in the playoffs next season.

"To Jesus goes all the glory, and I really just am grateful for the season that we had — obviously not the result we wanted. Lots of heartbreak, lots of sad emotions just coming up short, but there’s still those exciting feelings inside that there’s more out there. We’ll be back next year. The future’s bright."

The Bills, who have won five-straight division titles, became the first team to win 11 or more games over five straight seasons that didn't reach the Super Bowl at least once over that span.

Bookmaker sets Travis Kelce proposal odds for Super Bowl LIX

29 January 2025 at 14:12

The Super Bowl always brings some of the year’s craziest sports bets, and sometimes it has nothing to do with what happens on the field — at least during the 60 minutes of game time.

One of those bets involves a certain celebrity couple.

Kansas City Chiefs tight end Travis Kelce and pop superstar Taylor Swift were the talk of the town in Las Vegas last year, and some suggested he would propose to her on the field after the game.

Football fans will have a chance to bet on that during this year’s Super Bowl. FanDuel Sportsbook is providing the choice in Canada of whether Kelce will propose to Swift on the field after the Super Bowl's conclusion, according to the New York Post.

The odds were set at +750 that Kelce will propose, with a $10 bet yielding $75 if it were to happen.

On the flip side, Kelce not proposing to Swift has -1500 odds, which means there is a 93.75% chance it doesn’t happen at the Caesars Superdome Feb. 9.

Kelce and Swift created one of the biggest stories in the NFL during the 2023 season, and it only heightened when the Chiefs made it to their second consecutive Super Bowl, this time against the San Francisco 49ers in "Sin City."

Swift attended the game despite being on international legs of her Eras Tour, and they were spotted sharing a celebratory kiss on the field after the overtime victory.

This time around, there have been rumors an engagement is imminent for the power couple, especially with Swift spotted wearing an infinity ring in New York City earlier this month. Speculation has run rampant online ever since.

Swift is expected to be at the game just as she was in Kansas City for the 32-29 victory over the Buffalo Bills. There will also be specuation about who will be a part of her star-studded entourage in the luxury suite. She was spotted with rapper Ice Spice, actress Blake Lively and actor Miles Teller, among others, in Las Vegas.

But the main question will be whether Kelce has an extra celebration in store if the Chiefs win the Super Bowl over the Philadelphia Eagles, which they did in the 2023 Super Bowl to begin their run at history.

Kelce and the Chiefs will kick off Feb. 9 at 6:30 p.m. ET from New Orleans, where they could become the first team in NFL history to win three straight Lombardi Trophies.

Bill Belichick jokes Lombardi Trophy should be renamed after Tom Brady

29 January 2025 at 13:21

The NFL team that wins the Super Bowl at the end of the season is handed the Vince Lombardi Trophy.

Lombardi was the head coach of the Green Bay Packers when he led the team to two straight victories over the American Football League champions – the Kansas City Chiefs and Oakland Raiders, respectively. It wasn’t until the third NFL-AFL championship game that the term Super Bowl was used.

Lombardi’s Packers were one of the most dominant teams of the era. He had led Green Bay to three other NFL championships before the idea of an NFL vs. AFL was conceived.

Because of the history, the Super Bowl trophy was named after Lombardi. It’s one of the most prestigious trophies in sports, next to Lord Stanley’s Cup and the FIFA World Cup Trophy.

Legendary head coach Bill Belichick discussed the Super Bowl with Jim Gray on the "Let’s Go!" podcast. He told Gray it was the players who really deserve the credit for the Super Bowl victory. The legendary sportscaster reminded Belichick that it was Lombardi who the trophy was named for and not Bart Starr, who was the MVP of the first two games.

"Maybe they should name it the Brady Trophy," Belichick joked, referencing New England Patriots legend Tom Brady. "He won seven of them."

Belichick said teams can’t win without good players. He said he learned that when he was a defensive coordinator under Bill Parcells with the New York Giants and when he helped put together a tremendous Hall of Fame defense with the Patriots.

"You can't win games without good players. I don't care who the coach is. It's impossible. You can't win without good players," he said. "I found that out when I had (Lawrence) Taylor, (Carl) Banks, Harry Carson, Jim Burt, Everson Walls, all those guys with the Giants.

"Same thing when we got good at Cleveland and at New England it’s (Willie) McGinest, it's (Mike) Vrabel, it's (Tedy) Bruschi, it's Corey Dillon, it's Randy Moss, Troy Brown, Lawyer Malloy, Ty Law, Rodney Harrison. Those are guys that won the games, man. I didn't make any tackles. I didn't make any kicks. That was (Adam) Vinatieri, made that kick in four inches of snow."

Brady and Belichick won six Super Bowl titles together with the Patriots. The star quarterback then won one more with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

Philadelphia man shot after Eagles' playoff win among multiple violent incidents

29 January 2025 at 13:18

The Philadelphia Eagles earned a trip to the Super Bowl, and many of the city's residents have had to pay a steep price for the ensuing chaos

A 20-year-old man was shot during chaotic incidents that ensued in the city following the team's NFC championship victory over the Washington Commanders last Sunday. An 18-year-old suspect named Amre Wright has since been taken into custody, according to FOX 29

The victim is reportedly in stable condition.

The shooting is just one of many incidents that involved harm to a local. The Philadelphia Police Department is investigating one stabbing, two shootings, one act of vandalism and a vehicle striking several pedestrians, per FOX 29. So far, a total of 30 adults and one juvenile were cited for Disorderly Conduct or Failure to Disperse, and three adults were charged.

The individuals who have been charged reportedly include 34-year-old Tramayne Davis-Blockson, who was arrested and charged with Aggravated Assault, Possession of an Instrument of Crime and Recklessly Endangering Another Person in connection to a stabbing; and 32-year-old Jose Moya and 44-year-old Eugene Dennis, who were both charged with aggravated assault in connection to the assault of a police officer.

Additionally, a 26-year-old woman was reportedly taken into custody after striking eight pedestrians in the street, and the Philadelphia District Attorney's Office was reportedly vandalized with a shattered front glass door and two cracked glass windows.

A Temple University student even died after climbing up a flag pole and falling to his death. Tyler Sabapathy, 18, was a student and gymnast from Toronto, Canada with more than 120 medals in provincial, regional and international competitions. He attempted to climb a flag pole in the city in celebration of the team's win, and was taken to the hospital and was in very critical condition before he eventually died.

Eagles fans have been the subject of national scrutiny throughout the team's playoff run this season.

The fanbase garnered negative national attention after one of their own, New Jersey man Ryan Caldwell, was seen in a viral video verbally berating a woman with vulgar slurs during the team's first playoff game against the Green Bay Packers on Jan. 12. Caldwell was later fired from his job and released a statement apologizing for his actions.

Los Angeles Rams defensive end Jared Verse says Eagles fans hurled snowballs at him after his team's divisional round playoff loss in Philadelphia on Jan. 19. Verse made comments about "hating" the fans to reporters in the week leading up to the game.

Amidst the widespread criticism, former Dallas Cowboys star linebacker DeMarcus Ware told Fox News Digital that Eagles fans once hurled snowballs stuffed with batteries at his mother during a game his rookie year in 2005.

"My rookie season when my mom was in the stands, I told her not to wear my jersey, and she was in the front row, and we're up there in Philly. They were putting batteries in snowballs and throwing them, and one of them hit my mom," Ware said. "I turned around at the time, and I didn't care about football anymore. I wanted to go get the guy who was in the stands. But I didn't."
