MLB legend Pedro Martinez reveals family members missing after roof collapse in Dominican Republic

The former Boston Red Sox star talked about the tragedy that has left more than 120 people dead and hundreds more injured in Santo Domingo.

"I still have family members that are still in the rubble, and we don’t know what happened to them, but we just want to be strong, like we have always been," he said in a video posted to his Instagram.

Martinez expressed his condolences to those who have lost loved ones and who are still trying to find those who are missing.

"With a heavy heart I send condolences to all our family members and the people in the United States that have family in the Dominican Republic," he added in a post on X.

"We are sad and affected by the tragedy. Our hearts are with you.  We are a country that prays a lot and remains united all the time."

EX-MLB PLAYER TONY BLANCO CREDITED WITH SAVING FRIEND BEFORE DYING IN DOMINICAN REPUBLIC ROOF COLLAPSE

The Jet Set nightclub was packed on Monday night going into Tuesday morning as it held one of its weekly parties. Former MLB players Octavio Dotel and Tony Blanco were among those dead when the entire roof collapsed as revelers danced to a merengue concert.

Nelsy Cruz, the governor of the northwestern province of Montecristi and sister of former MLB All-Star Nelson Cruz, called Dominican Republic President Luis Abinader while trapped in the rubble. She died later in the hospital. Other victims included singer Rubby Perez, saxophonist Luis Solis, fashion designer Martin Polanco and several others.

Officials put the death toll at 124.

Authorities have asked for calm as those waiting for information on their loved ones have grown increasingly worried.

MLB remembered those who were lost in the tragedy before some games on Tuesday night.

"Major League Baseball is deeply saddened by the passings of Octavio Dotel, Tony Blanco, Nelsy Cruz and all the victims of last night's tragedy in Santo Domingo," he said. "We send our heartfelt condolences to the families and friends of all those who have been affected and to our colleague Nelson and his entire family," MLB Commissioner Rob Manfred said in a statement.

"The connection between baseball and the Dominican Republic runs deep, and we are thinking of all the Dominican players and fans across the game today."

Marlins outfielder makes 'one of the best catches you’ll ever see'

Miami Marlins center fielder Derek Hill made his case for catch of the year during Tuesday night’s game against the New York Mets.

The Mets had the bases loaded in the bottom of the sixth inning and were already leading 9-5 when Tyrone Taylor hit a deep drive to the warning track at Citi Field. Hill tracked the ball to his right the entire way.

Hill got close to the warning track, jumped and extended fully to make the catch and rob the Mets of doing any more damage.

"That’s one of the best catches you’ll ever see," broadcaster Kyle Sielaff said.

Hill’s catch even stunned Taylor.

"That was sick, bro. Unreal," the Mets outfielder told MLB.com. "didn't know off the bat, but after a couple steps, I saw nobody there at all. I was like, 'Oh, yeah!' Then he Supermanned that thing. Pretty incredible."

However, the damage from the Mets’ scoring onslaught was already done. Miami entered the top of the sixth inning down four runs but got three back. New York was able to push three more across the plate in the frame and eventually won the game 10-5.

Hill did his part at the plate. He was 1-for-4 with a two-run home run. He said the wind was a major issue in the outfield during the game, calling it an "interesting day."

Pete Alonso had four RBI for the Mets as they picked up their sixth straight win.

Alex Ovechkin admits he had doubts about reaching Wayne Gretzky record

Washington Capitals star Alex Ovechkin broke Wayne Gretzky’s record for most goals scored in an NHL career on Sunday with a powerplay score against the New York Islanders.

However, even the new record-holder had some doubts.

CLICK HERE FOR MORE SPORTS COVERAGE ON FOXNEWS.COM

Ovechkin was asked in an appearance on "Fox & Friends" on Wednesday whether he thought in 2020 that breaking Gretzky’s record would be possible. Gretzky tapped Ovechkin as the one to do it, if anyone had the chance.

"No. Even before this year, at 39 years old, I’d have to score 42 goals. In this league, in this hockey game right now, it’s hard to do," he said. "Like I always said, without my teammates, without my family, without all the support, we would never have reached that milestone."

CANUCKS SHOCK STARS WITH 3 GOALS IN FINAL MINUTE, OT WIN

Ovechkin’s 895th career goal was his 42nd of the season. He has played in 42 games this season and has had six multi-goal games, including hat tricks against the Vegas Golden Knights and Edmonton Oilers.

He recalled the history-making moment he scored against the Islanders.

"Honestly, I never thought it could happen," he said. "This is such a great moment for myself, for the Capitals organization, for hockey, for my teammates, for my family, friends and fans all over the world."

Ovechkin also teamed up with the V Foundation to help fight pediatric cancer.

In March, he vowed to donate a dollar amount equal to his career goal total every time he scores for the remainder of his career.

Canucks shock Stars with 3 goals in final minute, OT win

The Vancouver Canucks woke up late during their game against the Dallas Stars on Wednesday night, and their Western Conference opponent paid the price.

The Stars had already clinched a playoff spot and had hopes of catching the Winnipeg Jets for first in the Central Division. The Canucks, whose playoff hopes were already on the ropes, were set to hit a major roadblock with another defeat.

Vancouver trailed 5-2 with one minute left in the third period. Somehow, their fortunes changed rather quickly.

Aatu Raty got one past Casey DeSmith to make it a two-goal game. Moments later, Pius Suter added more pressure on Dallas with a goal of his own. Suter followed up with another score with seven seconds remaining in regulation.

Just like that, the game was tied.

Vancouver’s momentum continued to build in the overtime period, and nearly four minutes into the extra frame, Kiefer Sherwood scored his 18th goal of the season to give the Canucks the victory. Sherwood took a pass from Connor Garland from behind the net to deliver the game-winning goal.

The Canucks won 6-5.

"Says a lot about the group," Sherwood said. "‘Gar’ just made an absolute crazy play. Kind of felt like slow motion, got his head up and put it on my tape."

LATE NHL STAR JOHNNY GAUDREAU'S WIFE ANNOUNCES BIRTH OF SON 7 MONTHS AFTER HIS TRAGIC DEATH

Vancouver became the first NHL team to score three times in the final minute of regulation. Each score came without their goalie on the ice.

"That’s got to be one up there," Vancouver coach Rick Tocchet said. "I loved the fight, obviously, in the third period. To do that is a character win for a lot of guys, for the team.

"My son texted me – ‘You looked like last year’s team in the third.’"

The Canucks won the Pacific Division last year but have nearly fallen out of playoff contention altogether. The team is 36-29-13 with 85 points.

The Stars are four points behind the Jets for the top spot in the Central Division.

Stars captain Jamie Benn called the loss "unacceptable."

"That game should have been wrapped up," Benn said. "We should have found a way to get it done there."

New Mexico HS baseball player charged, team suspended amid allegations teen urinated in opponents' water jug

A New Mexico high school baseball player was arrested, and his team suspended over allegations the teen urinated in an opposing team’s water jug.

The 16-year-old, who attends Rio Rancho High School and played on the junior varsity, faced 15 counts of battery over the incident.

"We're glad authorities in Rio Rancho took this matter seriously and filed criminal charges," Albuquerque Public Schools said in a statement, via KOAT-TV. "Outrageous behavior like this must be met with swift consequences to send the message that it's unacceptable and will not be tolerated.

"A vast majority of athletes, coaches and parents at schools in Albuquerque, Rio Rancho and throughout New Mexico abide by good sportsmanship, and we're confident this unfortunate incident is an aberration."

The Rio Rancho Police Department launched an investigation into the allegations after rumors swirled about the alleged March 25 incident within the La Cueva High School community. Several La Cueva High School players may have drank from the allegedly contaminated water jug.

The entire Rio Rancho junior varsity baseball team was suspended in the midst of the probe.

"We want to make it clear that the alleged behavior is abhorrent and does not represent the standards and values expected of all students who attend Rio Rancho Public Schools," Rio Rancho Public Schools interim executive communications director Wyndham Kemsley said in a statement to the Rio Rancho Observer.

"If determined to be true, the discipline for all those involved will be severe."

Linda McMahon fires off warning shot to 'entities that continue to allow men to compete in women’s sports'

Education Secretary Linda McMahon fired off a warning to those who still allow transgender athletes in girls’ and women’s sports in a social media post on Tuesday.

President Donald Trump signed the "No Men in Women’s Sports" executive order in early February to prohibit biological males from competing in girls’ and women’s sports. However, some states have refused to comply with the order, while the NCAA, which altered its trans-inclusion policy, faced criticism for potentially allowing loopholes in its rules.

McMahon put everyone on notice.

"To all the entities that continue to allow men to compete in women’s sports and use women’s intimate facilities: there’s a new sheriff in town," she wrote on X.

"The Trump Administration will not allow you to get away with denying women's civil rights any longer."

Several high school athletics associations failed to comply with Trump’s executive order, but the biggest feud has come between the Trump administration and the state of Maine, and it has only escalated in the months since the order was signed.

MAINE LAWMAKERS SEND LETTER TO TRUMP CONDEMNING GOV JANET MILLS OVER TRANS ATHLETES IN GIRLS' SPORTS POLICIES

On Tuesday, 14 Maine state senators signed a letter sent to the White House condemning Gov. Janet Mills for continuing to support trans-inclusion in girls’ and women’s sports. The 14 senators wrote that Maine's current policies that enable trans inclusion violated the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act, as well as Title IX.

The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) froze funding to the state last week, and a referral has been made to the Department of Justice over ongoing trans inclusion in girls' sports in the state.

Maine officials filed a lawsuit against the USDA over the funding freeze on Monday. Trump and Mills had a public spat in which Trump vowed to see the Democratic governor in court over the issue.

Recently, USA Fencing, disc golf and NCAA women’s rowing have also come under fire for allowing a biological male to compete against women.

Fencer Stephanie Turner took a knee in protest of competing against a transgender athlete. Disc golfer Abigail Wilson followed suit with a public declaration about the lack of fairness in trans athletes competing against females in her sport.

Ithaca College came under fire earlier this month for allowing a transgender athlete to compete on its team despite the NCAA’s altered policy. The trans athlete competed in the Cayuga Duals, but only in the third varsity eight event, which is not factored into NCAA championship qualification. Ithaca called it a "misunderstanding."

Ex-MLB player Tony Blanco credited with saving friend before dying in Dominican Republic roof collapse

Tony Blanco, a former Major League Baseball player who played for the Washington Nationals, was credited with saving a teammate before he died in a Dominican Republic roof collapse.

Former MLB player Esteban Germán told MLB reporter Héctor Gómez he had just returned to the bathroom and sat down at their table when Blanco noticed the ceiling started to come down. Germán said Blanco pushed him out of the way as the ceiling was getting ready to fall on him.

Unfortunately, Blanco died moments later.

Blanco, World Series champion Octavio Dotel and Nelsy Cruz, the sister of ex-MLB All-Star outfielder Nelson Cruz, were among the nearly 100 people who died when the roof collapsed at the Jet Set club in Santo Domingo early Tuesday morning.

MLB Commisioner Rob Manfred was among those who paid tribute to those who were lost.

"Major League Baseball is deeply saddened by the passings of Octavio Dotel, Tony Blanco, Nelsy Cruz and all the victims of last night's tragedy in Santo Domingo," he said. "We send our heartfelt condolences to the families and friends of all those who have been affected and to our colleague Nelson and his entire family.

"The connection between baseball and the Dominican Republic runs deep, and we are thinking of all the Dominican players and fans across the game today."

MARINERS' VICTOR ROBLES FRACTURES SHOULDER AFTER SLAMMING INTO WALL DURING HIGHLIGHT-REEL CATCH

Officials said the death toll increased to 98 as rescuers continued their frantic search for any survivors.

Juan Manuel Mendez, emergency operations director, said Tuesday evening emergency personnel were still sifting through the rubble.

"We’re going to search tirelessly for people," Méndez said.

Jet Set is famous in the Dominican Republic for its Monday parties where renowned artists perform. Merengue singer Rubby Perez was performing when the roof collapsed and is among the missing.

"It happened so quickly. I managed to throw myself into a corner," he said, adding that he initially thought it was an earthquake," Perez’s manager Enrique Paulino said.

Blanco, 43, played for the Nationals in 2005. He appeared in 56 games and had one home run. He spent most of his career either in the minor leagues or in Japan. His son, Tony Blanco Jr., is in the Pittsburgh Pirates’ farm system.

Dotel, 51, played 15 years in the majors and won a World Series with the St. Louis Cardinals in 2011. He spent five of the 15 years with the Houston Astros. He picked up 109 saves in his career along with a 3.78 ERA.

Lakers' Luka Doncic left stunned after getting ejected over interaction with fan

Los Angeles Lakers star Luka Doncic was ejected in the fourth quarter of the team’s close game against the Oklahoma City Thunder on Wednesday after he picked up his second technical foul when he decided to talk trash to a fan.

The incident occurred with 7:40 left in the game. Doncic had put the moves on Thunder center Isaiah Hartenstein and directed comments at a fan who was sitting courtside at the Paycom Center. The referee who was near the sideline heard the comment and gave Doncic a technical foul.

Doncic was upset and pointed to the fan he was talking to, as did his teammates. Regardless, the technical foul stood and the Lakers guard would leave the game.

The Lakers lost to the Thunder 136-120.

Crew chief Tony Brothers said Doncic’s first technical came when he "directed profanity at a game official," according to a pool report, via Lakers Nation. Brothers said the second technical came when he "looked directly at an official and used vulgar language."

After Doncic was ejected, the Thunder outscored the Lakers 29-12.

"I mean, it was tough," Doncic said. "I mean, we were right there. I think we fought the whole game. … We came back in the third quarter. We were fighting, man. So it was tough to see that with this kind of situation to happen. And you know, that’s on me too, so I can’t let my team down like that."

LeBron James told reporters he did not know "why the ref was taking it personal," according to The Athletic.

Oklahoma City star Shai Gilgeous-Alexander had 42 points in the win.

Grizzlies’ Jaylen Wells stretchered off court after falling on head due to hard foul by Hornets player

The Memphis Grizzlies were kneeling and praying for their teammate Jaylen Wells, who needed to be stretchered off the court on Tuesday after a hard foul during a dunk had him fall face first onto the hardwood.

Wells was going for a transition dunk when Charlotte Hornets guard KJ Simpson ran underneath his legs on an attempt to stop the easy bucket. With Wells already in the air, Simpson's actions proved costly as he swept Wells' legs, causing him to flip in mid-air before falling down hard on his head.

Simpson’s actions were clearly not intentional, as he quickly went to check on Wells before medical staff rushed to him underneath the basket to assess the situation, which was very serious.

Intentional or not, Simpson was ejected after referees reviewed the play and upgraded his common foul to a Flagrant 2.

The crowd at Spectrum Center in Charlotte was silent, as medical staff tended to Wells. They determined he needed to have his head and neck stabilized as they placed him on a stretcher to leave the arena.

The crowd cheered as Wells was wheeled off the court, and he raised a hand to show that he was aware and moving.

Everyone on the court was in shock, but the Grizzlies’ side saw many kneeling and praying for Wells. Players like Ja Morant also had towels over their heads as they looked on.

During the second half of the game, Wells’ father, Fred, said his son was "awake and alert."

ESPN also reports that Wells’ agent, Aman Dhesi, said that the rookie suffered a broken wrist in the fall.

Wells has had a great rookie campaign, aiding in the Grizzlies’ run to a good playoff contender out of the Western Conference. He’s averaged 10.5 points, 3.4 rebounds and 1.7 assists over 26 minutes per game entering the game against the Hornets.

The shooting guard is also a very good defender, which has led to more playing time for Memphis this season. He was drafted in the second round (39th overall) after splitting his college career between Sonoma State and Washington State.

NHL first-round pick retires at age 21 due to tissue disorder diagnosis

An NHL prospect was forced to hang up his skates before ever playing for the team that drafted him.

Chaz Lucius, a first-round pick four years ago, announced his retirement Tuesday due to an Ehlers-Danlos syndrome diagnosis.

Lucius was drafted by the Winnipeg Jets with the 18th overall selection and had been playing for their AHL affiliate.

"I thought I was just unlucky. With this diagnosis of EDS, I now realize that my body could not handle the physical nature of playing hockey," Lucius said in a statement. "Given this condition, my injury history, and the physical nature of hockey, I have been medically advised not to continue to play."

Lucius said that he had been dealing with joint injuries over the years and had difficulty recovering from them.

"I feel blessed to have experienced all that hockey gave me over the years even though I am crushed that I cannot continue to pursue my dream of playing in the NHL," he said.

LATE NHL STAR JOHNNY GAUDREAU'S WIFE ANNOUNCES BIRTH OF SON 7 MONTHS AFTER HIS TRAGIC DEATH

"After much discussion and consultation with Chaz, his representatives, and medical professionals, the Winnipeg Jets Hockey Club fully supports his difficult decision to retire," the Jets said in a statement. "Chaz's condition and struggles with Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome (EDS) put him at risk of injury if he continues to play at the professional level, so we understand his choice. We wish Chaz all the best in his efforts to be an advocate for those dealing with EDS and hope for a bright future in front of him."

Lucius was a member of the United States National Development Program before playing at the University of Minnesota for the 2021-22 season. He competed in the 2023 World Juniors where he and the United States won a bronze medal.

During his time in the AHL, Lucius, a center, played in just 54 games, recording seven goals and 20 assists.

Angel Cabrera, who spent nearly 2 years in prison, on if he deserves to play in Masters: 'Why not?'

Perhaps the biggest storyline coming out of Augusta National Golf Club this week is the inclusion of Angel Cabrera, the 2009 Masters winner who is playing despite multiple convictions for threats and harassment against two of his ex-girlfriends.

Cabrera spent almost two years in prison in Brazil and Argentina before being released on parole in August 2023. He was later cleared to play at the PGA Tour Champions events later that year.

Cabrera was asked by reporters if he "deserved" to be playing in this year’s Masters given his time spent in jail for his crimes.

"I won the Masters," Cabrera said, via the New York Post. "Why not?"

No matter the age or rank on the world stage, winners of the Masters receive lifetime exemptions to play in the tournament each year, and Cabrera is taking advantage of that.

ANGEL CABRERA WINS 1ST GOLF EVENT SINCE PRISON RELEASE

He also attended the annual Champions Dinner on Tuesday night after his practice round.

"Life has given me another opportunity," he added. "I’ve got to take advantage of that and do the right things in this second opportunity. Obviously, I regret things that happened, and you learn from them."

Cabrera won his first golf tournament since he was released from prison, picking up the victory at the James Hardie Pro Football Hall of Fame Invitational, which is a PGA Tour Champions event. He shot 11-under par to squeak out a victory over K.J. Choi and Retief Goosen.

"Everything I’ve gone through the last few years, being here, having a chance to win, is very emotional," he said after his win.

While there are many calling out Augusta National Golf Club for allowing Cabrera to play, there are some who are excited to see him, like 2013 Masters winner Adam Scott.

"It’s a happy thing for me. We’ve got a fairly long history," Scott said about Cabrera on Sunday ahead of Masters week. "I first met him on the European Tour before we both were on the PGA Tour. We’ve played Presidents Cups, we’ve been partners."

Cabrera will tee off for his first round at the Masters on Thursday at 10:59 a.m. with Laurie Canter and Adam Schenk.

Mariners' Victor Robles fractures shoulder after slamming into wall during highlight-reel catch

A fracture in Seattle Mariners outfielder Victor Robles' shoulder will force him to miss at least the next 12 weeks of the baseball season.

An MRI on Tuesday confirmed that Robles suffered a small fracture in the humeral head of his left shoulder, according to MLB.com. If Robles' injured shoulder does ultimately require surgery, the Seattle center fielder's entire season could fall into jeopardy.

However, Mariners executive vice president/general manager Justin Hollander appeared optimistic about Robles' recovery and downplayed surgery concerns. Nevertheless, the Mariners will likely continue to closely monitor how the shoulder progresses.

ASTROS' SPENCER ARRIGHETTI BREAKS THUMB IN FREAK BATTING PRACTICE ACCIDENT

The Mariners moved Robles to the 10-day injured list on Tuesday.

The injury setback comes just one day after Robles made a leaping, highlight reel-worthy catch in the outfield. San Francisco Giants catcher Patrick Bailey hit a fly ball deep down the right field line in the bottom of the ninth inning on Monday's game.

Just as the ball carried foul, Robles jumped into the air and made the catch before slamming into the wall and the netting. Robles immediately appeared to be in pain as he dropped to his knees and threw the ball back towards the infield.

Robles was later forced to leave the field on the back of a cart. The game was tied when the Mariners' outfielder recorded the second out of the inning.

Avoiding surgery would likely put the 27-year-old on a healing timetable of six weeks. It could take another six weeks of rehab before Robles is healthy enough to return to action.

Robles started last season with the Washington Nationals before signing with the Mariners last June. He has compiled a .273 batting average and stolen three bases in 10 games so far this season.

Robles appeared in 77 games with Seattle in 2024. The Mariners will enter Tuesday's game against the Houston Astros with a 4-7 record.

Illinois school faces criminal DOJ referral after allegations of forcing girls to change with trans student

FIRST ON FOX: The Illinois school district that faced national scrutiny for allegations of forcing middle school girls to change in the same locker room as a transgender student has been referred to the Department of Justice.

The law firm America First Legal (AFL) made the criminal referral of the district Deerfield Public Schools 109 to the DOJ on Tuesday, urging the department to investigate the district and middle school where the allegations occurred for potential violations of federal and state law.

AFL alleged the district violated Code § 241, also known as the "Conspiracy against rights" statute, which makes it a federal crime for two or more people to conspire to injure, oppress, threaten, or intimidate any person in the free exercise or enjoyment of any right or privilege secured by the Constitution or laws.

"We ask that your office promptly open a directed criminal investigation into the allegations in the complaint for violations of § 241, take all actions necessary," the complaint reads.

AFL senior counselor Ian Prior advocated for a criminal investigation in a statement.

"The situation at Deerfield Public Schools has gone beyond a Title IX violation and has escalated to a situation that requires the Department of Justice’s Civil Rights Division to launch a criminal investigation. Students should not have their First, Fourth, and Fourteenth Amendment Rights sacrificed at the altar of radical transgender madness and the woke government bureaucrats that view the Constitution as nothing more than toilet paper should face the long arm of our Justice Department," Prior said.

The U.S. Department of Education's Office of Civil Rights announced in late March that it was launching an investigation into the Illinois Department of Education, the Chicago Public School District 299 and Deerfield Public Schools District 109 over reported Title IX violations.

Illinois mother Nicole Georgas brought the situation to light when she filed a civil rights complaint with the Justice Department after alleging that school administrators had attempted to force her 13-year-old daughter to change in front of a transgender student in the girls' locker room last month.

Georgas told Fox News Digital on Tuesday that she is "praying" for her daughter and justice amid the request for an investigation.

MAINE RESPONDS TO TRUMP ADMIN'S DECLARATION STATE VIOLATED TITLE IX BY ALLOWING TRANSGENDERS IN GIRLS SPORTS

"I am praying for justice for Cate and all the girls whose rights have been so callously disregarded," Georgas said.

Georgas revealed the complaint during a Board of Education meeting for Deerfield Public School District 109 last week, claiming the incident took place last month after her daughter had refused to change into her uniform during physical education because a biological male student had been present at the time.

"The girls want their locker rooms and bathrooms back. They want their privacy back. This is why I’m here tonight. My 13-year-old daughter’s well-being, mental health and privacy are at stake," Georgas said during her speech at the board meeting on Thursday.

Georgas then raised the issue to the school’s administration, noting to them that she believed it was a direct violation of President Donald Trump’s Keeping Men out of Women's Sports executive order. She said in her speech that the school administration had informed her that, under the direction of its legal counsel, the transgender student was free to use both the girls' bathroom and the girls' locker room

Fox News Digital has reached out to DPS 109 for comment.

The district previously provided a statement to Fox News Digital in response to the DOE investigation.

"Deerfield Public Schools District 109 complies with state law. The Illinois Human Rights Act prohibits all public school districts from discriminating on the basis of sex, including gender identity, and mandates that students must be permitted access to the locker room and bathroom that aligns with their gender identity," the statement read.

"We are sensitive to the privacy needs of all of our middle school students and ensure that no student is required to change into a gym uniform for physical education class in front of others.  When both our middle schools were renovated in 2017, we added five private changing stations within each locker room that are available to all students. All students also have multiple options to change in a private location separate from the locker room if they wish."

The district also said it will work with local families to determine next steps.

"The District and the Board are united with our leaders and educators on this issue and have a shared commitment to upholding the law," the statement continued.

"The District and the Board call upon all of those expressing concerns or perspectives on this issue with our staff and educators to do so in a respectful and civil manner. We are glad to work with families to address any individual concerns and determine appropriate next steps to support your child's well-being and participation."

Rory McIlroy, still vying for first Masters title, wants to 'block out the noise' at Augusta

It's now been over a decade since Rory McIlroy, who won four majors before he turned 26, last won one — and none of those have come at Augusta.

McIlroy won the 2012 and 2014 PGA Championships, the 2011 U.S. Open, and the 2014 Open Championship, with his best finish at Augusta coming in 2022 with his bunker hole-out to finish in second.

McIlroy's drought was just feet from ending last summer, but he missed two putts worth 6.5 feet on two of the final three holes at the U.S. Open, and Bryson DeChambeau's up-and-down on 18 at Pinehurst gave him his second major.

The Northern Irishman abruptly left the course and disappointed in the Open Championship a month later, missing the cut.

But for McIlroy, the reigning PLAYERS champion and Pebble Beach king, "It's just narratives. It's noise."

"It's just trying to block out that noise as much as possible," McIlroy said on Tuesday. "I need to treat this tournament like all the other tournaments that I play throughout the year.

"Look, I understand the narrative and the noise, and there's a lot of anticipation and buildup coming into this tournament each and every year, but I just have to keep my head down and focus on my job."

TIGER WOODS TEAMS UP WITH AUGUSTA NATIONAL TO BUILD PAR-3 COURSE AT THE PATCH

McIlroy hasn't fared greatly in his last two Masters tournaments, missing the cut in 2023 and finishing tied for 22nd last year.

But he has the second-best odds to win, behind only reigning champ Scottie Scheffler, understandably so. In five events this year, the 35-year-old hasn't finished outside the top 20, and has another top-five aside from his two victories.

However, McIlroy knows that legacy is about the majors — and he's zero for his last 38.

"I've had chances to win some of the biggest golf tournaments in the world, and it hasn't quite happened," McIlroy said. "But life moves on. You dust yourself off and you go again. I think that's why I've become a little more comfortable in laying everything out there and being somewhat vulnerable at times."

Ex-MLB players Octavio Dotel, Tony Blanco among dead in Dominican Republic roof collapse

Octavio Dotel, a World Series champion pitcher, and former major league Tony Blanco were among those who died following the collapse of a roof at a Dominican Republic nightclub, officials said Tuesday.

Dotel was a native of Santo Domingo, the Dominican Republic's capital city, and was inside the Jet Set nightclub early Tuesday when the roof fell as singer Rubby Pérez performed on stage.

Officials had rescued Dotel from the debris earlier and brought him to a hospital. But the World Series champion later succumbed to his injuries. MLB Commissioner Rob Manfred and Professional Baseball League spokesman Satosky Terrero also confirmed the death of Dominican baseball player Tony Blanco.

"Major League Baseball is deeply saddened by the pasings of Octavio Dotel, Tony Blanco, Nelsy Cruz and all the victims of last night's tragedy in Santo Domingo," he said. Texas' Arch Manning adds to growing NIL valuation, inks deal with clothing company

The departure of Quinn Ewers opens the door for Arch Manning to move into the starter role for the Texas Longhorns in 2025. While Manning prepares for an increased workload on the football field this upcoming season, he continues to make headlines for his off-field earnings.

Just a couple of years ago, Manning was one of the most highly sought after high school recruits in the U.S. He ultimately decided to take his potential and high-profile last name to Austin, where he was seen limited playing time over his first two seasons at Texas.

Manning's intriguing athletic potential, and being the nephew of Peyton Manning and Eli Manning, contributed to Arch landing several lucrative name, image, and likeness (NIL) deals since he entered the college football ranks.

NFL INSIDER ISSUES ARCH MANNING WARNING FOR TEAMS HOPING TO DRAFT HIM

The 19-year-old's NIL valuation currently stands at an estimated $6.5 million, according to data compiled by On3. The figure already placed him among the top-earning collegiate athletes. But this week, he added clothing company Vuori to the list of brands he's partnered with.

Vuori confirmed the deal with Manning in an Instagram post on Tuesday.

"Next Mann Up: Arch Manning. Vuori is excited to announce Arch Manning, college football player, as the newest Vuori Athlete. From his outstanding work ethic on and off the field to his unique ability to stay true to himself despite his rising status, our new athlete @archmanning embodies what winning really means to us: a passion to perform, and an inner knowing that true strength starts within," the company captioned a video showing Manning on a football field.

Manning appeared in 10 games last season, including the two contests he started in place of an injured Ewers.

The young quarterback finished the 2024 season with 939 passing yards and nine touchdowns against a pair of interceptions.

Texas defeated Clemson in the first round of the College Football Playoff, before a thrilling overtime victory over Arizona State in the quarterfinal. The eventual national champion Ohio State Buckeyes eliminated the Longhorns from playoff contention in January.

Texas opens the 2025 season against the Buckeyes in Columbus on Aug. 30.

Brandel Chamblee reveals interesting guidance for Masters coverage: 'There are things you shouldn’t say'

For decades, legendary sports broadcaster Jim Nantz has been the familiar sound of the Masters. His tone and familiar catchphrases have paired well with the tradition and reverence of Augusta National, but according to Brandel Chamblee, that’s not by mistake.

Chamblee, who currently serves as studio analyst for the GOLF Channel, said during a recent podcast appearance that covering the Masters requires a certain type of etiquette — one that is strongly encouraged by broadcast producers.

"There are things you shouldn’t say — fan is a big one. In their eyes, it’s short for fanatical, and they don’t want to refer to the people that are out there as being fanatical. That’s why you hear people say patron," he said on Barstool’s "Fore Play" podcast.

"If I said it, in my ear I’d get a — from a producer — I’d get ‘Woah!’"

Chamblee pointed out other differences, like the driving range, which at Augusta National is referred to as the "tournament practice facility." He also noted that the final nine holes during a round are not referred to as the "back nine."

"But if you said back nine on the air, you would get reprimanded because it’s the second nine. Because what you don’t want to have said, you don’t want somebody to say is ‘he’s playing the backside really well.’ Because back nine is close to backside, and backside is just far too colloquial."

While it might seem extreme to some, Chamblee said he believes the approach to covering the Masters has given way to some of golf’s biggest moments.

"You get these great calls by Jim Nantz, and Verne Lundquist, and back then it was Ben Wright, and they’re judicious in their word choice. It’s softer, it’s slower and more reverent. I think that’s a big part of the reason why it’s the best golf tournament of the year, I would argue."

On Thursday, patrons will be greeted by Nantz, who is covering his 40th Masters, with one of golf’s most famous sayings: "Hello friends, welcome to a tradition unlike any other."

Caitlin Clark denies claims she talks trash in WNBA, admits she'll only do it in self-defense

WNBA phenom Caitlin Clark has provided moments of awe and antagonism on the basketball court.

Clark's rookie year in 2024 and the end of her college career saw several confrontational moments with other players, sometimes including illegal hits on Clark.

Clark's fans levied much of the criticism for those situations against the other players involved, but some figures within women's basketball accused Clark of being a trash talker.

Las Vegas Aces head coach Becky Hammon suggested that Clark talks more trash than any other player in the WNBA.

"They jaw at each other, nobody talks more crap than Caitlin, too," Hammon said at a June press conference.

UConn women's basketball coach Geno Auriemma, during an interview on the "Make a Difference With Phil Martelli" podcast in November, said the reason why players go after Clark is because of her trash talk.

"Now she talks a lot of s--- on the court," he continued of Clark. "When people talk about the WNBA, 'Why are these people beating up on Caitlin Clark?' Because she talks a lot of s--- on the court. That's what makes her good. So she's not like this angel walking out there and everybody else is beating her up. Nah. She has got a lot to say."

WOMEN'S FINAL FOUR TV RATINGS SEE STEEP DROP-OFF WITHOUT CAITLIN CLARK

After an infamous hit against Clark by Chicago Sky player Chennedy Carter in June, former WNBA player Chiney Ogwumike said during an appearance on ESPN that Clark was trash-talking before the hit occurred.

"The WNBA has always been a physical league. ... And on the full sequence of that play, Caitlin was talking, and in this league, no one backs down to trash talk," Ogwumike said.

However, Clark suggested that all of these claims that she talks trash are false during an interview on Netflix's "My Next Guest Needs No Introduction with David Letterman."

"People say that I talk trash, I don't," Clark said.

Clark also added that opposing players don't talk trash to her either.

"No one really talks trash to me, honestly, I swear to you. Maybe it will happen next year," Clark said.

Clark also explained the circumstances that would prompt her to talk trash and admitted a time when it happened.

"The only thing is, if somebody says something to me, I probably will go back at you, but I'm not going to really start it.

"Somebody that did talk trash was [former Phoenix Mercury star] Diana Taurasi. But it was all in good fun. We were playing them at home, and she fouled me, like, pretty hard, kind of from behind. And I turned around, I said to the ref, 'It's intentional, you didn’t go for the ball,' [and] she, like, came back at me, and I was like, ‘All right, do it again.’ And we just kind of kept going back and forth at each other, and then we went down to the other end."

Clark added that later in the game, Taurasi told Clark, "I just love you."

Ex-Northwestern players settle alleged hazing lawsuit against school, former head coach Pat Fitzgerald: report

The group of former Northwestern football players have reportedly agreed to settle their lawsuits against the school, which alleged hazing and abusive behavior.

The former players agreed to drop all claims against both Northwestern and ex-head coach Pat Fitzgerald as part of the settlement, Bloomberg reported.

Fitzgerald was suspended by Northwestern in July 2023 after an ex-player of his reported alleged hazing in November 2022. The school conducted its own investigation, and though no evidence was found of Fitzgerald or his staff knowing of such hazing, it found he had opportunities to report hazing conduct.

A statement was released on Tuesday by Fitzgerald's attorneys, Dan Webb and Matthew Carter, which focused on evidence that their client "committed no wrongdoing." Also, Fitzgerald is moving forward with his wrongful termination lawsuit against Northwestern.

"Coach Fitzgerald learned yesterday that Northwestern University and certain former Northwestern football players have finalized a global settlement agreement to dismiss all claims made by the players against Northwestern and Coach Fitzgerald," the attorney's statement read, via The Inside Zone.

"Despite extensive written and testimonial discovery, there remains no evidence to show or suggest that Coach Fitzgerald was aware of any hazing at Northwestern. The discovery has thus confirmed what Northwestern said through President Michael Schill both before and after Coach Fitzgerald's termination: that there is no evidence that Coach Fitzgerald was aware of any hazing and that, despite a thorough and months-long investigation, Maggie Hickey found no credible evidence to believe Coach Fitzgerald, or any other coaching staff, knew about any alleged hazing.

EX-NORTHWESTERN FOOTBALL COACH PAT FITZGERALD SUES UNIVERSITY FOR WRONGFUL TERMINATION DUE TO HAZING SCANDAL

"While the settlement resolves the claims brought by the players, Coach Fitzgerald's claims against Northwestern remains. He continues to assert that Northwestern illegally terminated his employment, violated an oral contract, and defamed him, causing significant damage to his sterling reputation."

Fitzgerald was initially suspended two weeks in 2023, but he released a statement claiming he had no knowledge of any hazing. Northwestern players even released a statement defending their coach, while Schill admitted he might have been wrong in suspending Fitzgerald.

But more former players came forward with racism allegations, which ultimately led Schill to fire Fitzgerald altogether.

Fitzgerald filed a wrongful termination lawsuit months after his firing, claiming that he and Schill reached an oral agreement that he would face no further punishment from the university after the two-week suspension.

Fitzgerald was seeking $130 million in damages as part of his lawsuit.

His next court date in his trial against Northwestern is currently scheduled for Nov. 3, 2025.
