‘Minari’ (2020)

This critically acclaimed movie takes place in the summer and follows a Korean American family that moves to rural Arkansas to pursue the American dream by starting a farm. Steven Yeun stars as Jacob, the patriarch of the family whose stubbornness pushes him to work under a hot Arkansas sun — sometimes refusing help and putting his family second in his determination to succeed on his own.

The story is mostly told from the point of view of Jacob’s young son, David (Alan S. When Turner enters the case, he’s quickly able to determine that the woman was dead before her fall — meaning there’s a serious mystery to unravel here.

The story integrates all sorts of elements from the park into the mystery itself — Indigenous practices that bear similarities to some Jane Doe’s identifying marks, past Yellowstone cases that bear striking similarities and still haunt Turner and the sheer size of the terrain, which makes it disturbingly easy for people to go missing. The twists and turns of the investigation are genuinely unexpected.

It Features a Partner Dynamic That Really Works

As Ranger Vazquez, Lily Santiago does an admirable job of portraying the newer ranger’s eagerness to learn from Turner despite his rough and brooding demeanor. She becomes a de facto partner to the ISB investigator, and watching their relationship unfold is one of the true pleasures of the show.

Alongside Vazquez, we learn about a tragic incident from Turner’s past that shattered his marriage to Jill (Rosemarie DeWitt), which has a significant impact on their Jane Doe investigation. His nearly obsessive fixation on finding justice feels truly motivated, rather than him just playing into the “brooding cop with a dark past” stereotype.

Though a “grizzled older cop with an idealistic rookie” is also a familiar trope, Vazquez and Turner’s dynamic doesn’t feel rote. Instead, their relationship feels refreshing, especially since Vazquez is also hiding secrets of her own.

It’s a Quick Binge with a Satisfying Ending

This may sound like a backhanded compliment, but it’s true — at only 6 episodes, Untamed is a show you can get through in a weekend. Surprisingly, it moves at a fast clip without leaving too many loose ends.

The thing you have to remember about horror movies is that even the really good ones tend to get unfavorable reviews. The original incarnation of I Know What You Did Last Summer is a lot better than its low Rotten Tomatoes rank suggests. And for the time, getting Jennifer Love Hewitt, Sarah Michelle Gellar, Ryan Phillippe and Freddie Prinze Jr. at the peak of their stardom was quite an accomplishment.

After a drunken night of partying on the beach, Julie James (Hewitt), Helen Shivers (Gellar), Barry Cox (Phillippe) and Ray Bronson (Prinze) accidentally hit a man and resolve to hide their crime. One year later, the friends are estranged from each other when they’re stalked by a killer armed with a fish hook who sends them menacing messages that echo the name of the movie. It’s not as great as Scream, but it’s still pretty good for the ’90s.

4. ‘Friday the 13th’ (1980)

Jason Voorhees is in the original Friday the 13th, but not as the hockey mask-wearing serial killer we know and love. Instead, the first movie takes quite a while before letting the audience know who’s been murdering the camp counselors in and around Camp Crystal Lake as it prepares to open for the summer.

Alice (Adrienne King) and the rest of the counselors don’t realize the danger they’re in until it’s far too late. The killer has waited years for this moment, and these teens will be picked off one by one until the last survivor remains. This is an all-time classic horror flick, and it helped shape the genre for decades afterwards.

3. ‘The Lost Boys’ (1987)

The Lost Boys is arguably the best movie directed by the late Joel Schumacher and a rare opportunity to see the Coreys — Corey Haim and Corey Feldman — in the same film. The forecast for summer in Santa Carla, California, calls for a lot of sunshine and vampires. Kiefer Sutherland plays David, the leader of a band of vamps who have slowly been drawing a teenager named Michael Emerson (Jason Patric) into their ranks.

To save his older brother, Sam Emerson (Haim) has to turn to Santa Clara’s self-proclaimed vampire hunters, Edgar (Feldman) and Alan Frog (Jamison Newlander). But it may already be too late for Michael if they can’t find the head vampire who made David and the rest of the vamps.

Midsommar may be the outlier on this list as it doesn’t feature any slashers or supernatural creatures. But it’s definitely a horror film, even though writer and director Ari Aster characterizes it as a breakup movie. Florence Pugh has a star-making turn as Dani, a young woman whose relationship with her boyfriend, Christian (Jack Reynor), is severely strained even before they take off on a nine-day trip to rural Sweden for a rare festival that only takes place every 90 years.

The unhappy couple is accompanied by Christian’s friends, Mark (Will Poulter) and Josh (William Jackson Harper), as well as a few other outsiders. The rituals of the townspeople are extremely disturbing, and there’s an agenda in play that none of the visitors are aware of until it’s their time to participate… whether they want to or not.

Stephen King‘s stories aren’t always handled with the care they deserve, but director Andy Muschietti‘s take on It is one of the best horror movies of the last decade. Muschietti and the screenwriters updated the setting to the summer of 1989, and the film is impeccably cast with terrific young actors, including Stranger Things‘ Finn Wolfhard and Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves star Sophia Lillis.

Charlie’s superiors at the CIA laugh in his face when he tells them that he wants to hunt down his wife’s killers and confront them himself. Even Charlie’s mentor, Robert “Hendo” Henderson (Laurence Fishburne), doesn’t believe that Charlie has what it takes to go out in the field. But there’s more than one way to kill a man without a gun, and Charlie’s detractors won’t be laughing for much longer.

Speaking to Extra on Friday, July 18, Metz, 44, confirmed Moore, 41, and her family are “doing well” as they continue to pick up the pieces.

Mariska Hargitay is sharing details of a special moment she shared with her biological father, Nelson Sardelli.

According to People, the actress revealed at a screening of My Mom Jayne, at the HamptonsFilm’s SummerDocs series on Thursday, July 17, that she spent Father’s Day this year with Sardelli, 90, and he apologized to her.

A Georgia teen has been accused of killing her mother and stepfather after she first allegedly reached out to TikTok bloggers for help on solving the case.

According to court documents viewed by Us Weekly on Friday, July 18, Sarah Grace Patrick was arrested on July 8 in Carroll County on two counts of murder and two counts of aggravated assault. At the time, she was denied bond.

“We can confirm that an arrest has been made in this case,” the Carroll County Sheriff’s Office also wrote via Facebook on July 8. “Kristin Brock’s 17-year-old daughter, Sarah Grace Patrick, has been taken into custody and charged with two counts of Murder and two counts of Aggravated Assault in connection with the deaths of her mother [Kristin] and stepfather [James Brock].”

The arrest came more than one year after police first discovered the bodies of Kristin, 41, and James, 45, on the morning of February 20, 2025. According to police, they both died from apparent gunshot wounds in their home.

Before an arrest was made, Patrick reportedly reached out to multiple TikTok influencers to bring attention to the case, People reported.

Carroll County Communications Director Ashley Hulsey confirmed to FOX News Digital in a July 11 press conference that Patrick had a TikTok account that commented on posts related to the case and said investigators uncovered “mountains of evidence.”

Patrick’s grandfather Dennis Nolan has questioned the strength of the case and believes his granddaughter is innocent.

The new I Know What You Did Last Summer featured more familiar faces than anticipated.

Warning: Major spoilers below for the plot of IKWYDLS 2025: 

The latest iteration of the beloved slasher flick, which hit theaters on Friday, July 18, follows a group of teens who find history repeating itself when they accidentally kill a man on the 4th of July. When a masked fisherman begins to murder them one by one, they enlist the help of Jennifer Love Hewitt and Freddie Prinze Jr.’s Julie James and Ray Bronson, the original survivors of the 1997 attacks.

Hewitt, 48, and Prinze Jr., 49, both starred in IKWYDLS alongside Sarah Michelle Gellar and Ryan Phillippe, with the latter two not making it to the sequel. Gellar’s onscreen death in particular has been lauded as one of the best in horror movie history, with many fans wishing her character, Helen, made it out alive after nearly escaping the fisherman’s clutches.

Director and cowriter of the 2025 film Jennifer Kaytin Robinson clearly understands the love for Gellar’s character, honoring her in various ways in the new film. Madelyn Cline’s Danica is clearly meant to be Helen 2.0, a beauty queen and overall diva (in the best way). The new cast makes a stop by Helen’s grave amid the chaos, and podcaster Tyler (Gabbreitte) sports a Helen Shivers T-shirt throughout the film — “Oh god, isn’t she so hot? Sucks she’s dead,” Tyler says.

Tyler and Danica also have attack sequences that mirror Helen’s incredible fight for her life in 1997, although this time, Danica makes it out alive — but not before she’s visited by Helen herself.

In a shocking cameo appearance, Gellar reprises her iconic role and comes to Danica in a dream sequence. “You’re Helen Shivers,” Danica says in shock, to which Helen replies, “And don’t you f***ing forget it.” Dressed in her croaker queen dress, she warns Danica she’s going to die, telling her, “Stay in the dream as long as you can. Nothing good is waiting for you on the other side,” before she begins to bleed and transform into a ghoulish figure.

Prior to the IKWYDLS hitting theaters, Robinson swore she “tried” her best to get Gellar to return for the movie to no avail.

“I harassed her! But she is dead,” Robinson told Entertainment Weekly earlier this year. “I tried to pitch some crazy s*** too. I was like, ‘What if it’s like you weren’t dead and you’re actually alive, but in hiding?’ And Sarah’s like, ‘I was on ice. I was the most dead a person could be. You can see my frozen body.’ I was like, ‘Yeah, but what if?’ And she said, ‘I am dead. I am Sarah Dead Gellar.’”

With real-life husband Prinze Jr. back in action as Ray, however, Gellar did get to fly to Australia with the couple’s kids (Charlotte, 15, and Rocky, 12) to visit the set and serve an important role for Robinson.

“My best friend [Robinson] is directing it, so we joke that I have an unofficial job, which is, I am continuity,” Gellar joked to EW. “So I’m always the one telling her, ‘Well, that would happen, or that wouldn’t happen with those characters,’ so I do have kind of an unofficial job title.”

Prinze Jr., for his part, didn’t give any inclination his wife would be reappearing in the new film while speaking to Us earlier this month — but stood firm on the opinion that Helen had to die back in 1997.

“If she would’ve made it out, I don’t think people would be talking about it the way they do now,” the actor exclusively told Us Weekly. “That is one of the greatest chase scenes and death scenes in the history of horror films. And that’s all due to  Jim [Gillespie], the director, Denis [Maloney] the DP and Sarah the actor in it. And the way they put that scene together.”

Prinze Jr. noting that giving the audience “that much hope” that Helen would make it out alive — she nearly escapes to the 4th of July parade before the fisherman takes her down in an alley — only adds to the iconic moment.

“I love that it gets people worked up. It gets me worked up just talking about it now. Because it’s such an exciting scene to watch. I love that she died. I love the way she died. I love that audiences wish she didn’t die. That just means the director was right. That just means you wanted her to live so much because they executed at such a high level for you to believe she was gonna make it. … That’s what I love about horror films, is when I know they can make people talk about them this many years later.”

I Know What You Did Last Summer is in theaters now.
