ESPN broadcasters face pro-Colorado bias accusations as Buffaloes blown out in bowl game

29 December 2024 at 09:34

The BYU Cougars picked up a huge season-ending win over the Colorado Buffaloes on Saturday night, thwarting the perfect sendoff for Shedeur Sanders and Heisman Trophy winner Travis Hunter.

The Cougars blew out the Buffaloes in the Alamo Bowl, 36-14. BYU running back L.J. Martin had two touchdowns to go with 93 rushing yards, and Sione I Moa added another score on the ground to help BYU to the win.

College football fans who tuned into the ESPN broadcast of the game got pretty upset with the spotlight being heavily on Colorado, and they made their voices heard on social media.Β

BYU offensive lineman Connor Pay even told the broadcasters to talk more about the team, according to broadcaster Dave Pasch.

"He walked up out there (the production meeting) yesterday and said to us, β€˜Talk about BYU just a little bit, would you?’ Well, we’re talking about Connor Pay, and we’re talking about BYU now," Pasch said in the fourth quarter with the Cougars up 33-7, via Awful Announcing. "I'm sure the fans in Provo would love us to talk about BYU the whole night."

Pasch’s broadcast partner Dusty Dvoracek added that BYU "gave us plenty to talk about."

Pay was among those who weighed in on the call.

For what it’s worth, Colorado’s Sanders and Hunter are set to become first-round picks in the upcoming draft. Not to mention, Deion Sanders is the head coach of Colorado and has rebuilt the program into one of the most captivating in the nation.

Sanders said it was "tough" knowing that some of the players he’s been coaching for the last two or three years are going to be leaving his side for the next part of their journeys.

BYU finished the season 11-2, producing their third 10-win season in the last five years. They haven’t had a run like that since the mid-2000s when they won at least 10 games from 2006 to 2009 and then again in 2011.

Kalani Sitake had the team go from a meager five wins in their first season in the Big 12 Conference last year to 11 wins and a bowl appearance.

Sitake is 5-2 in bowl games since taking over the program in 2016.

Patriots chant 'Fire Mayo' as team suffers blowout loss to Chargers

29 December 2024 at 09:09

New England Patriots fans seem to have had enough of Jerod Mayo as the head coach’s first season at the helm winds down.

Reporters in Foxborough, Massachusetts, who took in the Patriots’ 40-7 loss to the Los Angeles Chargers on Saturday night heard "Fire Mayo" chants coming from the stands at Gillette Stadium.

New England fell to 3-13 with the loss. If the Patriots lose next week, three wins would be their lowest total since they finished 2-14 in 1992. The team was 4-13 last season – the last year Bill Belichick was at the helm. Mayo took over for Belichick in January.

Mayo was asked about the chants after the game.

"You hear those things. But at the same time, they paid to sit in the seats, and we've got to play better," Mayo told reporters, via ESPN. "If we play better, we don't have to hear that stuff."

The offense has been among the heavily scrutinized issues for the Patriots.

Patriots president Jonathan Kraft appeared to get caught on camera complaining about the play-calling during the team’s loss against the Arizona Cardinals two weeks ago. The offense hasn’t gotten much better since then.

Behind rookie quarterback Drake Maye, the Patriots are 30th in the league in points scored and 31st in yards gained. Mayo’s defense is 25th in points allowed and 23rd in yards allowed.

Deatrich Wise Jr., who has been with the Patriots since 2017, and Davon Godchaux each backed Mayo after the loss to the Chargers.

Wise said he thought he and his teammates should keep believing in Mayo.

"The guy's in his first season. It's not going to be golden. We didn't expect to win a Super Bowl this year. I get it, nobody wants to get beaten 40-7, but the chant is ridiculous," Godchaux added.Β

"Everybody plays a part in this. It isn't just Jerod Mayo. Players, coaches, front office. We just have to get better as a whole organization," he said. "I believe in this organization.

"We just had probably the best team in the NFL right now on the ropes last week [in Buffalo]. I don't believe in all that other ridiculous stuff. The guy is in his first year. It's just ridiculous."

Ex-Trudeau adviser casts doubt on Canadian PM's future after Trump floats Wayne Gretzky idea

29 December 2024 at 08:34

A former top adviser to Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau gave a grim outlook on the world leader’s political future, days after U.S. President-elect Donald Trump floated NHL legend Wayne Gretzky as a possible replacement.

A countdown started earlier this month on Trudeau’s days in office after Finance Minister Chrystia Freeland resigned from his cabinet. On Friday, Trudeau’s former chief adviser Gerry Butts thought it was "unlikely" that Trudeau would lead the Liberal Party in the next election.

Butts wrote in a Substack newsletter that Freeland’s resignation was a big blow for the party, and it could mean that Trudeau's political fate is sealed.

"If, as is now widely expected, Mr. Trudeau's resignation is imminent, the only way forward is a real leadership race," Butts wrote, via The Canadian Press.

"If you want to know who can play hockey, put on a hockey game. It doesn't matter who you think you support at this moment, we'll all have a more seasoned view if we see these people in live action."

Butts served as Trudeau’s principal secretary when he won election in 2015. His strong words came days after Trump teased Canada over its political turmoil, even floating Gretzky as a possible replacement for Trudeau.

"I just left Wayne Gretzky, β€˜The Great One as he is known in Ice Hockey circles. I said, β€˜Wayne, why don’t you run for Prime Minister of Canada, soon to be known as the Governor of Canada - You would win easily, you wouldn’t even have to campaign,’" Trump wrote in a post on Truth Social.

WAYNE GRETZKY'S WIFE SHARES TRUMP POST FLOATING NHL LEGEND AS CANADIAN PRIME MINISTER

"He had no interest, but I think the people of Canada should start a DRAFT WAYNE GRETZKY Movement. It would be so much fun to watch!"

Since Freeland’s resignation, Trudeau has faced calls to resign. Trump weighed in on Freeland’s departure as well.

"The Great State of Canada is stunned as the Finance Minister resigns, or was fired, from her position by Governor Justin Trudeau," Trump posted to his Truth Social, trolling Trudeau, after previously suggesting Canada should become the 51st state in the U.S.

"Her behavior was totally toxic, and not at all conducive to making deals which are good for the very unhappy citizens of Canada. She will not be missed!!!"

The House of Commons Public Accounts Committee chair John Williamson said that lawmakers will start meetings on Jan. 7 to consider a vote of no confidence in the Liberal government, according to Reuters. The vote would have to pass the House of Commons to defeat the government.

Canadian Parliament will reconvene on Jan. 27, according to Reuters.

"It is now clear that the Liberal Government does not have the confidence of Parliament. Conservative, Bloc Quebecois and NDP members β€” representing a majority of MPs - have all announced they will vote non-confidence in the Liberal Government," Williamson wrote in his letter.

East Carolina-NC State fight mars end of Military Bowl, ref left bloodied

29 December 2024 at 08:14

The Military Bowl featured a matchup of in-state rivals East Carolina and N.C. State and the game’s temperature heated up before the end, which left an official bloodied.

The Pirates were about to wrap up a 26-21 win over the Wolfpack. East Carolina had just intercepted an N.C. State pass on defense and all they had to do was run out the clock. Running back Rahjai Harris ran the ball up the middle with 44 seconds left, but a fight ensued close to the Pirates’ sideline.

East Carolina wide receiver Yannick Smith appeared to swipe a towel from N.C. State defensive back Tamarcus Cooley. The Wolfpack played and then chased Smith and pushed him to the ground. Two other East Carolina players jumped into the fray to defend Smith.

It was another eight minutes before everyone could calm down, and the final play could occur.

At least one official was seen with his face bloodied. Eight players were ejected from the game.

"I’m embarrassed as a coach," N.C. State coach Dave Doeren said. "I know our players are, too. That is not how people of this program, the players of this program, staff of this program, want anything to do with something like that.Β

"To me, it was a terrible response to something that happened to one of our players, and there’s no excuses for it. So I apologize to ECU and their team for the way we responded."

East Carolina head coach Blake Harrell said there was "no place in sports for that."

He seemed to challenge other in-state schools to add them to their schedules. East Carolina and N.C. State are only about 80 miles apart and have each other on their schedules for next season.

"I don’t think you can look at our fans and tell them it’s not a rivalry. It’s an hour and 15 minutes up the road," Harrell said. "And there’s a couple of other schools about the same distance. Maybe they should put us on their schedule as well, instead of trying to take our players. They want to call our players and take our players. Well, how about put us on the schedule?

"We’re going to be looked at like a little step-brother, that’s fine. These guys are going to compete, they’re going to take up the challenge. I know we got to go play these guys again next year, at the beginning of the year. But we’re going to celebrate this one tonight."

East Carolina finished the season 8-5 and N.C. State ended the year 6-7.

The Associated Press contributed to this report.
